Today’s thought “No silence so that everyone will know that there is only one Supreme Ruler all over the earth” (February 17)

Sometimes we have the impression that God wants to keep still, but He always has an eye and ear for those who want to come to Him.

In today’s psalm of Asaph [C a Levitical musician, a descendant of Gershon, at the time of David; 1 Chr. 6:39; 15:17; 2 Chr. 5:12] we find the writer asking God not to be quiet any longer. Not to hold His peace or to be still. (Psalm 83:1) Asaph wrote the psalm in a time that God’s enemies were causing a commotion and those who hated Jehovah God were rising up! (Psalm 83:2) Lots of people were conniving, making an uproar against God’s people, conspiring against those Jehovah cherished. (Psalm 83:3) they were getting ready to attack God’s chosen people [L raise up their head; Psalm 2:1] making secret plans [plots Psalm 83:2] against God’s cherished treasure.

We can read that in those ancient times also alliances were made against God’s people (Psalm 83:5-8). Today several people also forge the knives together against lovers of God. But they should be strong and trust their God Who is above all other gods. Our God is namely the Most Sovereign, Source of everything, All-knowing, All able to do and everywhere to be, the Mightiest of them all.

“ Ascribe unto Jehovah, ye kindreds of the peoples, Ascribe unto Jehovah glory and strength.” (Ps 96:7 ASV)

“ Who is the King of glory? Jehovah strong and mighty, Jehovah mighty in battle.” (Ps 24:8 ASV)

“ And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, Jehovah appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am God Almighty; walk before me, and be thou perfect.” (Ge 17:1 ASV)

“ That they may know that thou alone, whose name is Jehovah, Art the Most High over all the earth.” (Ps 83:18 ASV)

“ that thou shalt be driven from men, and thy dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field, and thou shalt be made to eat grass as oxen, and shalt be wet with the dew of heaven, and seven times shall pass over thee; till thou know that the Most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will.” (Da 4:25 ASV)

“ Then said he, These are the two anointed ones, that stand by the Lord of the whole earth.” (Zec 4:14 ASV)

In this world, many love to take for themselves the pasturelands or meadows of that belong to the Only True God. (Psalm 83:12-13)

“ Who said, Let us take to ourselves in possession The habitations of God. O my God, make them like the whirling dust; As stubble before the wind. As the fire that burneth the forest, And as the flame that setteth the mountains on fire,” (Ps 83:12-14 ASV)

The psalm writer asks his heavenly Father to make them like whirling dust, to blow them away like a tumbleweed, scattering them like chaff before the wind [worthless and without substance] (Psalm 83:13-14) We should know they are like rootless people and as such are not as strong as they may look at first. God shall pursue them with His tempest and terrify them with [the violence of] His storm. (Psalm 83:15) By sending His raging winds to chase them, hunt them down, and terrify them the Adonai shall let them be ashamed and dismayed forever. (Psalm 83:18) We shall come to see how God shall cover their faces with shame and disgrace. He shall let them be humiliated and perish (Psalm 83:15-16,17-18).

They and the whole world shall come to recognise that there is Only One Divine Creator. We too can ask God that He shall let all those who are not for Him and those who worship multiple gods (like the Trinity) know that He alone — whose Name is Jehovah — is El Elyon, the Most High, the Supreme Ruler over all the earth (Psalm 83:18)

“ So pursue them with thy tempest, And terrify them with thy storm. Fill their faces with confusion, That they may seek thy name, O Jehovah. Let them be put to shame and dismayed for ever; Yea, let them be confounded and perish; That they may know that thou alone, whose name is Jehovah, Art the Most High over all the earth.” (Ps 83:15-18 ASV)
