Coming together

From the acts of apostles and from early civil writings of the first century of our contemporary era we come to know that those who want to follow the teachings of Jesus Christ tried to come together at different occasions. There was not set one specific day in the week, but they could meet any day in the week and break the bread in remembrance of what Jesus did at his Last Supper.

Though we also may see that the fist day of the week may have been special, but although Sunday was also a day that Christians met together to remember their Lord in the breaking of bread and partaking of wine, it was not considered a “Sabbath Day” – see Acts 20:7; 1 Corinthians 16:2.  They met on the first day of the week because many of the early Christians were also Jews and still met to worship in their Synagogues on the true Sabbath, so they could not be at two places at once and the following day was a good day to meet their Christian friends. Their meetings were not just one of half an hour or one hour but could take several hours, that’s why an other day was chosen than the day when they spend also several hours in the synagogue.

Acts 20:7 The Scriptures 1998+  (7)  And on the first day of the week,the taught ones having gathered together to break bread, Sha’ul, intending to depart the next day, was reasoning with them and was extending the word till midnight.

1 Corinthians 16:2 The Scriptures 1998+  (2)  On the first day of the week let each one of you set aside, storing up whatever he is prospered, so that there are no collections when I come.

Those followers of Christ considered that they had to meet as many times as possible and had to break bread with each other on several occasions. As such they considered that they were not mandated to keep any particular day:

1 Corinthians 11:26 The Scriptures 1998+  (26)  For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the death of the Master until He comes.

Romans 14:4-5 The Scriptures 1998+  (4)  Who are you that judges another’s servant? To his own master he stands or falls. But he shall be made to stand, for Elohim is able to make him stand.  (5)  One indeed judges one day above another, another judges every day alike. Let each one be completely persuaded in his own mind.

A certain day to have meetings

The onset of this article series were the reactions we get for having meetings on different days of the week and not always having a Sunday service.

According to us we can and should be able to meet several times in the week and can break more than once in a week the bread in remembrance of Christ’s Last Supper. We do believe we have specific days which are still set, like Nisan 14 and having to remember for ever the exodus from Egypt. But to have a Sabbath or Sunday service is something people should decide for themselves, being liberated by Christ.

Today too we should let everyone be fully persuaded in his own mind. When you personally are fully convinced in your own mind  [i.e.,  concerning your relative importance] that you have to keep a Sabbath on the Sabbath or on a Saturday or on a Sunday that is your right, but do not impose it on others.

The apostles reminded those who questioned why the goyim who became followers of Christ did not keep to the Jewish laws that the Law of Moses was done away by Jesus his death on the stake. According to them we may not be deceive by loftiness of words of man, but should find wisdom in God’s Word and come to understand that there is now no necessity to observe the Sabbath or, indeed, any festival, e.g. the day of Christ’s death.

Walking in Christ

All who received Jesus Christ the Lord should walk in him, rooted and built up in him and confirmed in the faith, abounding in him in thanksgiving, but not have any man cheat them by philosophy and vain deceit: according to the tradition of men according to the elements of the world and not according to Christ, because for in him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead corporeally and as a Christian, as a follower of Christ we should be filled in him, who is the head of all principality and power.


The same as for the matter of circumcision, tithing and other  regulations which were before rules for the Jews. The scribes and Pharisees paid tithe of mint and anise and cummin, but have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgement, mercy, and faith: these ought they to have done, and not to leave the other undone. So they paid the tenth part of the increase annually arising from the profits of land and stock, allotted to the clergy for their support. Tithes are personal, praedial, or mixed; personal, when accruing from labour, art, trade and navigation; praedial, when issuing from the earth, as hay, wood and fruit; and mixed, when accruing from beasts, which are fed from the ground.

Tithing, meaning giving 10%, is also a concept taken from the Mosaic Law. Jesus did not object his followers providing necessary funds for the working of the community. But when people wanted to give something they had to do it freely. His followers were also not to beg for money, but when they did not receive help in one place they had to go to the next village to continue preaching over there. By Jesus having laid down his life we have become under grace. All the churches of the Gentiles are justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.

Romans 6:14 The Scriptures 1998+  (14)  For sin shall not rule over you, for you are not under the law but under favour.

Galatians 2:16 The Scriptures 1998+  (16)  knowing that a man is not declared right by works of Torah, but through belief in יהושע {Jeshua} Messiah, even we have believed in Messiah יהושע {Jeshua}, in order to be declared right by belief in Messiah and not by works of Torah, because by works of Torah no flesh shall be declared right.

The people of the community were asked to contribute voluntary according to their possibilities.

1 Timothy 6:17-19 The Scriptures 1998+  (17)  Charge those who are rich in this present age not to be high-minded, nor to trust in the uncertainty of riches, but in the living Elohim, who gives us richly all for enjoyment,  (18)  to do good, to be rich in good works,1 to be generous, ready to share, Footnote: 1Mt. 16:27.  (19)  storing up for themselves a good foundation for the time to come, so that they lay hold on everlasting life.

2 Corinthians 8:7-15 The Scriptures 1998+  (7)  But as you excel in every way – in belief, and speech, and knowledge, and all diligence, and in your love for us – that you should excel in this kind gift as well.  (8)  I speak not by command, but I am proving the genuineness of your love by the eagerness of others.  (9)  For you know the favour of our Master יהושע {Jeshua}? Messiah, that being rich, He became poor for your sake, so that you might become rich through His poverty.  (10)  And in this I give an opinion: It is to your advantage not only to be doing what you began and were desiring to do a year ago,  (11)  and now also complete the work, that as there was a readiness in desiring it, so there also should be a completion out of what you have.  (12)  For if the readiness is present, it is well received according to what one has, not according to what he does not have –  (13)  not, however, that others should be eased and you hard pressed,  (14)  but by fair sharing, that now at this time your plenty for their need, so that their plenty might also be for your need – that there might be fair sharing.  (15)  As it has been written, “He who gathered much did not have too much, and he who gathered little had not less.”

There was requested that there may be equality and generosity. And there was told that there is a blessing for generosity and not for the one which sows sparingly because that one shall reap also sparingly. Those who can saw bountifully should do so and shall reap also bountifully, but every man has to give according as he purposes in his heart, so others do have to let the other person give as he desires; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loves a cheerful giver.

2 Corinthians 9:6-11 The Scriptures 1998+  (6)  And this: He who sows sparingly shall also reap sparingly, and he who sows on blessing shall also reap on blessing.  (7)  Let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not of grief or of necessity, for Elohim loves a joyous giver.  (8)  And Elohim is able to make all favour overflow toward you, that you, always having all you need in every way, have plenty for every good work.  (9)  As it has been written, “He scattered abroad, He gave to the poor, His righteousness remains forever.”  (10)  And He who supplies seed to the sower, and bread for food, shall supply and increase the seed you have sown and increase the fruit of your righteousness,  (11)  being enriched in every way for all simplicity, which works out thanksgiving to Elohim through us.

We may not forget that Jesus did not ask for any payment for him doing what he did, giving his life for many. He is now in heaven and can do nothing with our money.
Also God we do not have to pay anything. Too many people do forget that everything belongs already to God, so there is nothing that we really can give to Him. And like Christ, God is nothing with our worldly offers and since Jesus gave Him the most precious sacrifice God does not want or need any other sacrifices any more. Jesus is also the fulfilment and the last offering God needed.

Giving is about demonstrating our thanks to God for providing for us in the past and our trust in God to provide for us in the future.

As with everything to do with the New Covenant, tithing or any giving, is not a legal requirement, but a matter of the heart, of the Spirit – faith expressing itself through love.

Galatians 5:6 The Scriptures 1998+  (6)  For in Messiah יהושע {Jeshua} neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any strength, but belief working through love.

We  should see that circumcision is not made by hand in despoiling of the body of the flesh: but in the circumcision of Christ.  Buried with him in baptism we too are lifted from this world. In Christ we are risen again by the faith of the operation of God who has raised him up from the dead. And we, when we were dead in our sins and the uncircumcision of our flesh, we can face cleanliness, and liberation. The handwriting of the decree that was against us is now blotted out. (Colossians 2:4-14-17)

Colossians 2:13-17 The Scriptures 1998+  (13)  And you, being dead in your trespasses1 and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, Footnote: 1Eph. 2:1.  (14)  having blotted out the certificate of debt against us – by the dogmas – which stood against us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the stake.  (15)  Having stripped the principalities and the authorities, He made a public display of them, having prevailed over them in it.  (16)  Let no one therefore judge you in eating or in drinking, or in respect of a festival or a new moon or Sabbaths –  (17)  which are a shadow of what is to come – but the Body of the Messiah.

Sacred days

When you as a believing person observe a certain day as specially sacred, you have to do it out of devotion to the Most High Divine Lord above all lords, יהוה Jehovah God of gods.  On such a day you choose you have to have only certain foods which you can eat out of devotion to Jehovah. Your actions should then be a sign of thankfulness for what you might receive from God. You should then also be thankful to God for what you eat.  And when you refuse to eat certain foods, does so out of devotion to the Lord above all lords, and be thankful to God for what he does give you to eat.

Romans 14:6-7 The Scriptures 1998+ (6) He who minds the day, minds it to יהוה {Jehovah}. And he who does not mind the day, to יהוה {Jehovah} he does not mind it. He who eats, eats to יהוה {Jehovah}, for he gives Elohim thanks. And he who does not eat, to יהוה {Jehovah} he does not eat, and gives Elohim thanks. (7) For not one of us lives to himself, and not one dies to himself.

1 Corinthians 10:30-31 The Scriptures 1998+  (30)  But if I partake with thanks, why am I evil spoken of for what I give thanks?  (31)  Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the esteem of Elohim.

The New Testament does not refer to Christians being condemned for not keeping the Sabbath, and as told in a previous chapter, in Exodus 31:13-17, it is stated that the Sabbath was a sign between God and Israel. There is no mention that it was ever made a sign between God and Christians.

Christians are not under the Law of Moses. Paul makes that very clear in Galatians 3:24,25:

“The law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor.”

We also mentioned how Paul was upset when some Christians were going back to the law and called them “foolish Galatians” for doing so (Galatians 3:1), reminding them that there is freedom in Christ for Christian believers.

Christians are free to choose whether or not they want to regard the Sabbath as a special day. Paul says:
“Let no-one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or sabbaths, which are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is of Christ” (Colossians 2:16,17).

Sabbath-keeping was not one of the commands the apostles felt was necessary to force on Gentile believers. It is inconceivable that the apostles would neglect to include Sabbath-keeping if it was God’s command for Christians to observe the Sabbath day.

On the day Christians want to come together it is like whatsoever they do in word or in work, that their actions should be clean and honest. On such day of gathering they should let the word of Christ dwell in them abundantly: in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms, hymns and spiritual canticles, singing in grace in their hearts to God.

Colossians 3:12-17 The Scriptures 1998+  (12)  Therefore, as chosen ones of Elohim, set-apart and beloved, put on compassion, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, patience,  (13)  bearing with one another, and forgiving each other if anyone has a complaint against another, indeed, as Messiah forgave you so also should you.  (14)  But above all these put on love, which is a bond of the perfection.  (15)  And let the peace of Elohim rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one Body, and be filled with thanks.  (16)  Let the Word of Messiah1 dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing with pleasure in your hearts to the Master in psalms and songs of praise and spiritual songs. Footnote: 1John 12:48, Dt. 18:19, Rev. 19:13.  (17)  And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the Name of the Master יהושע {Jehsua}, giving thanks to Elohim the Father through Him.

Priests exempt from keeping the Sabbath

In Christ, all should be united and are described as being priests (1 Peter 2:9) – who were exempt from keeping the Sabbath (Matthew 12:5) because they were doing the Lord’s work and not their own.

1 Peter 2:9 The Scriptures 1998+  (9)  But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a set-apart nation, a people for a possession, that you should proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvellous light,

Matthew 12:5 UKJV  Or have all of you not read in the law, how that on the sabbath days the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are blameless?

Under Christ we have become children of God, belonging to the Elohim. Everything we say and do should be dedicated to Him. As Paul says in

1 Corinthians 10:31 UKJV  (31)  Whether therefore all of you eat, or drink, or whatsoever all of you do, do all to the glory of God.

Followers of Christ have Jesus as their High Priest and are all members of the Lord’s “Royal Priesthood,” and are therefore exempt from keeping the Sabbath even if it were binding on the world today. We are to show forth His works, not our own, in everything we do every day. That is the privilege and challenge of life in Christ.

Salvation through keeping the law of Christ rather than that of Moses

As written before we have to be fully aware what we want to believe and what we want to follow. It is every Christian’s fully right to follow the Mosaic Law, but then they have to keep all those Laws of Moses or Levitical Laws or Jewish ritual laws.

And in case we would like to keep the Sabbath, we can do, but we must do so properly. We may not forget that it is fatal to keep the Mosaic Law partially, because this will result in our condemnation (Galatians 3:10; James 2:10).

Galatians 3:10 UKJV  For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continues not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them.

James 2:10 UKJV  For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.

In the debate about keeping Sabbath and having services on the Friday night, Saturday morning or on a Sunday we noticed that there is a common error in the Sabbath-keeping debate, namely the concept that the Sabbath was the day of worship.

The Sabbath had to do with taking rest. On other days worship services could and did take place in synagogues and also by the followers of Christ at their home. Nowhere in Scripture is the Sabbath day commanded to be the day of worship. Yes, Jews in Old Testament, New Testament, and modern times use the Sabbath, from Friday night until Saturday sundown, as the day of worship, but that is not the essence of the Sabbath command. In the book of Acts, whenever a meeting is said to be on the Sabbath, it is a meeting of Jews and/or Gentile converts to Judaism, not Christians.

From the writings of the apostles and from civil writings of early Christians we do get to know that the early Christians continued to meet together in the temple courts every day. (Acts 2:46-47)

Acts 2:46-47 The Scriptures 1998+  (46)  And day by day, continuing with one mind in the Set-apart Place, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart,  (47)  praising Elohim and having favour with all the people. And the Master added to the assembly those who were being saved, day by day.

I.e. for teaching and worship that they came together “Every day” and not just on a Sunday or on the Sabbath. They also did not only meet in temples or church-buildings but also in  their homes, where they kept what many today call ‘church’ and as such would have a house-church. Their meetings where moments to study the Scriptures, to discuss the Holy Writings, to pray together, to sing psalms and songs of praise, but also to eat together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favour of all the people. This way they had their numbers growing.

In honour of Christ’s resurrection they also gathered on the first day of the week (our Sunday), not the Sabbath day (our Friday – Saturday) (Acts 20:7; 1 Corinthians 16:2). On Sunday, the early Christians observed Sunday not as the “Christian Sabbath” but as a day to especially remember Jesus Christ and to worship the One Who sent their rabbi and Who accepted Jesus his ransom offering.

By the redeeming offer (atonement) the followers of Christ are set free and salvation came over us by the redemptive life and death of Jesus.  Through the life, sufferings, and sacrificial death of Christ, people got saved, but they still have to make the right choice and show obedience to the Gospel. They get salvation through keeping the law of Christ rather than that of Moses. God saves us, not because of any good deeds we ourselves have done, but because of His mercy. We are also saved through the washing of new birth by our immersion in water, and the renewing work  of the Holy Spirit, whom God pours out upon us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour and by his heavenly Father the Great Saviour.

Titus 3:4-5 The Scriptures 1998+  (4)  But when the kindness and the love of Elohim our Saviour toward man appeared,  (5)  He saved us, not by works of righteousness which we have done but according to His compassion, through the washing of rebirth, and renewal by the Set-apart Spirit,

2 Timothy 1:8-11 The Scriptures 1998+  (8)  So do not be ashamed of the witness of our Master, nor of me His prisoner, but suffer hardship with me for the Good News according to the power of Elohim,  (9)  who has saved us and called us with a set-apart calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and favour which was given to us in Messiah יהושע  {Jeshua} before times of old,  (10)  but now revealed by the appearing of our Saviour יהושע  {Jeshua} Messiah, who indeed abolished death and brought life and incorruptibility to light through the Good News,  (11)  for which I was appointed a proclaimer, and an emissary, and a teacher of the gentiles.

Romans 11:5-7 The Scriptures 1998+  (5)  So therefore also, at this present time a remnant according to the choice of favour has come to be.  (6)  And if by favour, it is no longer of works, otherwise favour is no longer favour. And if it is of works, it is no longer favour, otherwise work is no longer work.  (7)  What then? Yisra’ĕl has not obtained what it seeks, but the chosen did obtain it, and the rest were hardened.

Yisra’ĕl, Israel God’s chosen people were not allowed to do any work on the Sabbath since the days in the desert:

Exodus 35:2-3 The Scriptures 1998+  (2)  “Work is done for six days, but on the seventh day it shall be set-apart to you, a Sabbath of rest to יהוה  {Jehovah}. Anyone doing work on it is put to death.  (3)  “Do not kindle a fire in any of your dwellings on the Sabbath day.”

Exodus 16:23 The Scriptures 1998+  (23)  And he said to them, “This is what יהוה  {Jehovah} has said, ‘Tomorrow is a rest, a Sabbath set-apart to יהוה  {Jehovah}. That which you bake, bake; and that which you cook, cook. And lay up for yourselves all that is left over, to keep it until morning.’ ”

This command was for the selected people or the Jews and was not for the non-Jews. Between the exodus period and the time of Christ his preaching, people were punished when they broke the law of the Sabbath.

A man who gathered sticks on the Sabbath, presumably in order to kindle a fire, was punished with death for doing so (Numbers 15:32-36).

Numbers 15:32-36 The Scriptures 1998+  (32)  And while the children of Yisra’ĕl were in the wilderness, they found a man gathering sticks on the Sabbath day.  (33)  And those who found him gathering sticks brought him to Mosheh and to Aharon, and to all the congregation.  (34)  And they put him in under guard, because it had not been declared what should be done to him.  (35)  And יהוה  {Jehovah} said to Mosheh,
“The man shall certainly be put to death, all the congregation stoning him with stones outside the camp.”
(36)  And all the congregation brought him outside the camp and stoned him with stones, as יהוה  {Jehovah} commanded Mosheh, and he died.

Those denominations who teach that Sabbath-keeping is binding upon their members should therefore punish those members with death when they break the Sabbath, like יהוה  {Jehovah} commanded Moses. There should be no cooking of food or use of fire in any form – e.g. in driving motor vehicles, using heating systems etc. Orthodox Jews today set an example of the kind of behaviour expected on the Sabbath: they remain indoors all day except for religious reasons, and are not personally involved in cooking, transport etc. Most of those ‘Christians’ who claim to keep the Sabbath fall far short of this.

Ten commandments

It is often argued that keeping of the Sabbath was one of the Ten Commandments given to Moses, and that, while the rest of the Law of Moses was done away, the obligation remains to keep all of the Ten Commandments. Seventh Day Adventists make a distinction between a ‘moral law’ of the Ten Commandments and a so-called ‘ceremonial law’, which they believe was done away by Christ. This distinction is not taught in Scripture.

The Old Covenant refers to the Law of Moses, which was replaced on the stake by the New Covenant. It can be shown that the ten commandments, including that concerning the Sabbath, were part of the Old Covenant which was done away by Christ:

Deuteronomy 4:13 The Scriptures 1998+  (13)  “And He made known to you His covenant which He commanded you to do, the Ten Words, and He wrote them on two tablets of stone.

Again it should be noted that this covenant, based upon the Ten Commandments, was made between God and the people Israel, not Gentiles of the present day.

Moses ascended Mount Horeb to receive the stone tables upon which God had written the Ten Commandments. Moses later commented concerning this,

Deuteronomy 5:2The Scriptures 1998+  (2)  “יהוה  {Jehovah} our Elohim made a covenant with us in Ḥorĕb.

the “us” being Yisra’ĕl, bounded in agreement (a covenant) through those Ten Commandments. (Exodus 34:28). This same covenant included details of the so-called ‘ceremonial law’ (Exodus 34:27).

Exodus 34:27 The Scriptures 1998+  (27)  And יהוה  {Jehovah} said to Mosheh, “Write these Words, for according to the mouth of these Words I have made a covenant with you and with Yisra’ĕl.”

For after the tenor of these words it was that the Elohim Most High God made a covenant with His chosen man Moses and with His chosen people Israel, not with the goyim or gentiles, the non-believers or heathen.

If we argue that keeping the covenant made in the Ten Commandments is necessary, we must also observe every detail of the entire Law, seeing that this is all part of the same covenant. It is evidently impossible to do this.

Hebrews 9:4 speaks of “the tables of the covenant“. The Ten Commandments were written on the tables of stone, which comprised “the (old) covenant.” Paul refers to this covenant as “written and engraven in stones“, i.e. on the tables of stone. He calls it

the ministration of death…the ministration of condemnation…that which is done away” (2 Corinthians 3:7-11).

The covenant associated with the Ten Commandments can certainly not give any hope of salvation.

When Jesus says:

“If you love Me, keep My commandments” (John 14:15),

he is not talking about the commandments in the Law of Moses. These were injunctions on the people of Israel – never on gentiles. Jesus’ commandments are to do with the state of our hearts, to do with love, forbearance, grace, mercy, compassion.

Christ blotted out “the handwriting of ordinances that was against us”  (Colossians 2:14) on the torture tool of death, his stake. This alludes to God’s handwriting of the Ten Commandments on the tables of stone. Likewise Paul speaks of

the law…being dead…the oldness of the letter” (Romans 7:6),

referring to the letters of the Ten Commandments which were written on the tables of stone.

Done away with Christ

Just one of the Ten Commandments is styled “the law” in Romans 7:8, “The law… said, Thou shalt not covet“. The preceding verses in Romans 7:1-7 stress how “the law” that has dominion over a man as long as he lives, has been done away by Christ’s death, we also became dead to the law by the body of Christ; “the law” therefore includes the Ten Commandments.

Romans 7:1-14 The Scriptures 1998+  (1)  Or do you not know, brothers – for I speak to those knowing the Torah – that the Torah rules over a man as long as he lives?  (2)  For the married woman has been bound by Torah to the living husband, but if the husband dies, she is released from the Torah concerning her husband.  (3)  So then, while her husband lives, she shall be called an adulteress if she becomes another man’s. But if her husband dies, she is free from that part of the Torah, so that she is not an adulteress, having become another man’s.  (4)  So my brothers, you also were put to death to the Torah through the body of Messiah, for you to become another’s, the One who was raised from the dead, that we should bear fruit to Elohim.  (5)  For when we were in the flesh, the passions of sins, through the Torah, were working in our members to bear fruit to death.  (6)  But now we have been released from the Torah, having died to what we were held by, so that we should serve in newness of Spirit and not in oldness of letter.  (7)  What, then, shall we say? Is the Torah sin? Let it not be! However, I did not know sin except through the Torah. For also the covetousness I knew not if the Torah had not said, “You shall not covet.”  (8)  But sin, having taken the occasion through the command, did work in me all sorts of covetousness. For apart from Torah sin is dead.  (9)  And I was alive apart from the Torah once, but when the command came, the sin revived, and I died.  (10)  And the command which was to result in life, this I found to result in death.  (11)  For sin, having taken the occasion through the command, deceived me, and through it killed me.  (12)  So that the Torah truly is set-apart, and the command set-apart, and righteous, and good.  (13)  Therefore, has that which is good become death to me? Let it not be! But the sin, that sin might be manifest, was working death in me through what is good, so that sin through the command might become an exceedingly great Sinner.  (14)  For we know that the Torah is Spiritual, but I am fleshly, sold under sin.

All this makes it clear that the Old Covenant and “the Law” included the Ten Commandments. As they have been done away by the New Covenant, the Ten Commandments have therefore been removed.

Of the 10 commandments listed in Exodus 20:1-17, only nine of them were reinstituted or better, have been reaffirmed, in spirit, in the New Testament. Of the Ten Commandments Commandments 3, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 can be found in 1 Timothy chapter 1 alone, and Commandments 1, 2 and 10 in 1 Corinthians 5; in Matthew 19:18, we do find 6 commandments: murder, adultery, stealing, false witness, honour parents, and worshipping God; adding to the fore-mentioned coveting of Romans 13:9 . Worshipping God properly covers the first three commandments.

But never is the fourth commandment concerning the Sabbath repeated in the New Testament as obligatory for us. Instead of reaffirming the Sabbath, Jesus said that he is the Lord of the Sabbath (Matthew 12:8).

Though the power or strength of the sin is still the Torah followers of Christ are given the victory through their Lord Jesus Christ.

1 Corinthians 15:56-57 The Scriptures 1998+  (56)  And the sting of death is the sin, and the power of the sin is the Torah.  (57)  But thanks to Elohim who gives us the overcoming through our Master יהושע  {Jeshua} Messiah.

• 9th. – Col. 3:9; Eph. 4:25; 2 Tim. 3:3

• 10th. – Eph. 5:3; Col. 3:5.

Entering into God’s rest

Note that in Hebrews 4, the writer tells us that in Christ we have entered into God’s rest, His Sabbath which is typical of the millennial rest which will be enjoyed by the whole earth when Jesus comes. We have found and will find our rest in Christ.

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30)

Worshipping on Saturday or Sunday

As we have tried to let you see in the previous postings, there is nothing wrong with worshipping on Saturday or on the Jewish Sabbath (Friday night for example)? Absolutely not!

Every day is a ‘Day of God’. We should worship God every day, not just on Saturday or Sunday!

Many churches today have both Saturday and Sunday services. There is freedom in Christ (Romans 8:21; 2 Corinthians 3:17; Galatians 5:1).

Should a Christian practice Sabbath-keeping, that is, not working on Saturdays? If a Christian feels led to do so, absolutely, yes (Romans 14:5). However, those who choose to practice Sabbath-keeping should not judge those who do not keep the Sabbath (Colossians 2:16). Further, those who do not keep the Sabbath should avoid being a stumbling block (1 Corinthians 8:9) to those who do keep the Sabbath.

Galatians 5:13-15 sums up the whole issue:

“You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature; rather, serve one another in love. The entire law is summed up in a single command: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’ If you keep on biting and devouring each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other.”

A day without taking the symbols

The previous weekends our thought were with the many people who died in the many wars. In World War I it looked for many as if the world would come to an end. And after the horrible battle was finished many thought it would never happen again.

Chris Adwards, in the first weekend of November talked about the remembrance poppy, which originally in Flanders was a sign of conquest and possibility of preponderance, because the flower was so strong it came back every year again and if nothing was done at the fields seemed to grow with thousands.

During the First World War the Canadian physician and Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae was also astonished by the beauty of that wild flower. This red rose inspired him to write a war poem in the form of a rondeau. “In Flanders fields the poppies blow / Between the crosses, row on row, / That mark our place; and in the sky / The larks, still bravely singing, fly / Scarce heard amid the guns below.”

Soldiers could take up their quarrel with the foe but no matter what happened and how the ground was filled with holes form the bombs, this beuatifu flower brought the only fresh colour next to the blood, into the fields. Many blood was shed and mingled with the red of the flowers which still kept growing as if the world could not harm it.

In Flanders for centuries there has been a battlefield for many countries.

At those battles strangely enough many called to God to help them and where sure that God was on their side. At times, on Christmas night they took time off and came together to sing songs and to remember the birth of Jesus Christ, whom they all called their saviour.

After Jesus had died his followers came together at regular times to remember a more important day than his birth. The day before Jesus was going to die should be the more important day for all Christians. On that night Jesus took bread and wine and asked his disciples to remember what he was doing that night. Later, in the breaking of the bread others could see the sign of Christ.

Jesus had declared, “I am the bread of life.  Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” His followers had to remember his actions and do the breaking of bread as a remembrance of the last meal the apostles and Christ had together, but in the first place as the sign of the New Covenant.

Normally on several days in the year we come together to remember the death of Christ and this breaking of bread on the night before he died.

Bread and wine are also symbols of life and of the products of the earth and the products of God the Creator. It is also a symbol of unification. In a family the members come together to eat with each other and to share the wine. Most welcome friends are also invited at the table. People are not able to live without food, and Jesus has become our food. God has provided the food for life and we can accept Jesus peace offering by sharing the bread and wine with each other.

In the ecclesia we come together as brothers and sisters and invite others to come and join us. The gathering is about welcome, meeting our desperate need, recognising Jesus, compassion, acceptance, undeserved love, God’s provision and the right response of our hearts. This time of the year we not only think about Jesus’ death, but about many who lost their life in ridiculous battles, which could have been avoided when people would have lived more according to the Will of God and not according to their lusts.

Greed and want are those things which bring problems and let other people want to have property what does not originally belong to them. It makes people wanting more than that what God has already given them.

Perhaps therefore it is not bad to stand still and think about our wishes and about our greed and wrong intentions. Even when people where saved from slavery and on their way to the promised land they where not pleased whit what God gave them. Some of them also preferred to take more manna than needed. Israel was given manna and quails when they had no other food in the wilderness.  They got fed up with it and we must be careful that our remembrance services don’t become ordinary and turn the special privilege we have of remembering Jesus in bread and wine into the mundane.

Therefore last Sunday we contemplated and we remembered the difficult moments Christ had to go through and the horrible nightmare which befell so many youngsters when they had to go the war in the Great War. We thought of the storm Paul and the members on the ship had to face (Reading of the day: Acts chapters 26-27)

Accused by the Jews of being a “pestilent fellow …  a mover of sedition …  and the ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes …  [who had] gone about to profane the temple” (Acts 24:5, 6), Paul took his stand, as a follower of Jesus Christ, on the basis of the promises to Israel.  The focus of the apostle’s faith was on the promises to the fathers of Israel.  On those promises we need to meditate more often.

In all those previous time people did not listen to God and did not have their eyes focused on the love of Christ. Today we still see these people who are blockheads and stick their fingers in their ears so they won’t have to listen. They screw their eyes shut so they won’t have to look, so they won’t have to deal with me face-to-face and let me heal them. (Acts 28:27)

Sunday the 11th of November those who lost their lives fighting in two world wars were remembered at war memorials throughout the world. Not only at war memorials but in hundreds of thousands of homes across the world the eye may have rest for more than a moment on a fading photo of seventy years ago: so too the fresher photos of those lost in many conflicts since. Not only are the soldiers remembered but the many civilians too who lost their lives because of enemy action.  Many people in wars were bullied or even killed because of their believes. Our thoughts were with those who gave their live for not giving in to false teachings and for wanting to serve the only One God.

Only those over about seventy-five years-of-age will perhaps recall the joyful release of 1945. Like people imprisoned and delivered from a tremendous storm, people spilled out onto the streets in joyful celebration as the news spread that hostilities had finally ceased. The restrictions, dangers and distresses of six years of war seemed to be over. But it took years to recover. For years in the schools pupils had to share one book with three pupils and ot be happy to have enough chalk to write on the slates. In Belgium, Holland, France and Britain  many items that we now take for granted remained rationed for several years. For a decade or more, buildings gutted by bombing remained as silent witnesses.

It took more forty years after the end of the war to pay the U.S. for the loan provided by their government to help economic recovery.

The winter of 1946-47 was the coldest for half a century in England, Holland and Belgium had to face a terrible storm and flood in 1953. Combined with consequent power shortages, post-war life was hard. Normal life did not return for a long time.

At our time of wealth it is not bad to take a moment to stand still at all those hardships.

Because there is still so much trouble in the world, we had a special talk on the Paris meeting on the 17th of October with a collection for the help funds. On the 11th of November we took distance of partaking the breaking of bread at the service, because it was a moment of silence and part of coming to proper understanding of what Jesus had done and why.

As children of God, we have a destination. There are, and have been many storms on the way. We may have suffered loss of property. We, or those near to us, may have been (or are) ill. The record in Acts 27 does not say that Paul was ill, but few people can resist the violent motion of the heaving sea on their stomachs. The people around Paul were afraid of ‘the sea and waves roaring’ but he remained calm. So should we. So must we. The tyrants and the terrors of this world must necessarily come and go but the Word of the Lord remains sure. Peter writes:

And although it wasn’t revealed to them, [it was] to you. For they were just servants of things that those who preached the good news to you have shown you, through the Holy Breath that was sent from heaven, and which even the messengers [of God] want to learn more about.  As the result, prepare your minds to understand! Be perfectly sober about your hope of the loving care that will be conveyed to you at the revelation of Jesus the Anointed One.  As obedient children, don’t go back to being what you used to be by desiring ignorant things.  But, like the Holy One who called you, become holy in all your ways.  For it is written, ‘You must be holy, because I am holy!’  So, if you are calling on this Father (who doesn’t discriminate, but judges each one by what he does), it’s time for you to fearfully turn back from your isolation.  For, you must recognize that the ransom, which was paid to release you from the worthless way of life that you learned from your fathers, wasn’t paid for with things that corrode, like silver or gold.  It was [paid for] with the precious blood of the Anointed One, who is like a spotless and perfect lamb.  Although he was known before the arrangement was established, he is being recognized in you at the end of this period in time,  whenever you (through him) are being faithful to God (He who raised him from the dead and glorified him), so that your faith and hope will be in God.  Now that obedience to the truth has purified your lives; truly care about your brothers and reach out in sincere love for them with your whole hearts.  For, you weren’t regenerated as seeds that rot, but by something that doesn’t decay… the promises of the living and enduring God.  Because, ‘All flesh is like grass, and its glory is like flowers in a field. Grass dries up and flowers drop,  but the words of Jehovah are age-long.’ These are the words that we preached to you as good news.

Because our flesh is as grass, and all the esteem of man as the poppyflower of the grass. The grass withers, and its flower falls away, but the Word of Elohim, the Most High God remains forever.

As in the Newburry ecclesia where they also celebrated their communion service in a different way from the usual, we only remembered the symbols symbolically.  In Newburry their lunch beforehand included bread and wine but they didn’t eat all of it.  We also left over for the needy ones and had our thoughts with all the people in distress and need.

But we were very pleased to have been together in a series of an inspired meetings about life and death. The abstinence of something which seems so obvious was not a bad idea to remember all of what God has given us and that we may be blessed to have the Word, announced as Good News to us all.

Servant of his Father

The last few days we encouraged our members to spend time in the Bible this weekend, first focusing on the death of our Saviour, then celebrating how death has been defeated.

We looked at how this master teacher who could do miracles was humble to take up the work of slaves. He also never wanted his name or position exalted. For Jesus it was clear he and we always had to follow what the Father in heaven wanted, and should never haver our priorities at the first place. Jesus did not follow his own path but gave his all being in the hands of his Father. He did not follow his own judgements but God’s judgements. He always looked to what God’s ways were and how he could step in line with it  and how his followers had to follow God’s ways, which should always be higher than our ways.

Christ is the Way

” יהושע  said to him, “I am the Way, and the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. ” (John 14:6 The Scriptures 1998+)
““Of Myself I am unable to do any matter. As I hear, I judge, and My judgment is righteous, because I do not seek My own desire, but the desire of the Father who sent Me. “If I bear witness of Myself, My witness is not true. “There is another who bears witness of Me, and I know that the witness which He witnesses of Me is true. ” (John 5:30-32 The Scriptures 1998+)
“I am the good shepherd.1 And I know Mine, and Mine know Me, Footnote: 1Ezek. 34:11-12, Heb. 13:20, 1 Peter 2:25, 1 Peter 5:4. even as the Father knows Me, and I know the Father. And I lay down My life for the sheep. “And other sheep I have which are not of this fold – I have to bring them as well, and they shall hear My voice, and there shall be one flock, one shepherd.1 Footnote: 1Ezek. 34:23, Ezek. 37:24. “Because of this the Father loves Me, because I lay down My life, in order to receive it again. “No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. Jesus said it himself, in case he would have been sent by himself to this earth, than he would be a deceiver, and his witness would not be true, so worthless and perjury.

Jesus who was aware he  only could do all those miracles because he received the blessings and the power of his Father, was willing to bring this power of his Father to the advantage of the people around him; He also wanted to share that life God had given him, with us in abundance.

Jesus as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, to make himself of no account, futile, meaningless, wilful to his Father, he esteemed the other better than himself in lowliness of mind, and did want to get the best for the other and contradictory to the world he never wanted to please himself, but he wanted to please God, his Father to whom he wanted to be obedient. He had a concern for the people around him their needs and concerns. He was willing to give his life as a ransom for them and those he even did not know. Jesus was willing to offer his body as a lamb on the slaughter table so that we could have life, and that we may have it even more abundantly so that  we are enabled to bear fruit like Jesus did bear much fruit.

Luke tells us that Jesus is the real man who presented himself to God his Father and was as such the παῖς  or ‘servant’ of God, in the sense in which Isaiah has spoken of the Messiah as the ‘eḇed jehovah,’ ‘servant of Jehovah (= servant of God).’ The apostle Luke presents the Christ in his bearing on the history of God’s Kingdom and of the world – as God’s Elect Servant in Whom He delighted as Isaiah predicted. In the Old Testament, to adopt a beautiful figure, the idea of the Servant of the Lord is set before us like a pyramid: at its base it is all Israel, at its central section Israel after the Spirit (the circumcised in heart), represented by David, the man after God’s own heart; while at its apex it is the ‘Elect’ Servant, the Messiah. And these three ideas, with their sequences, are presented in the third Gospel as centring in Jesus the Messiah. By the side of this pyramid is the other: the Son of Man, the Son of David, the Son of God. The Servant of the Lord of Isaiah and of Luke is the Enlightener, the Consoler, the victorious Deliverer; the Messiah or Anointed: the Prophet, the Priest, the King.

In this counsellor we find a shepherd as David. Jesus was to shoot forth the Branch of David, the other servant of God. The ‘Servant of the Lord’ in relation to Israel’s history was Kingship in Israel; the ‘Servant of the Lord’ in relation to Israel’s ritual ordinances was the Priesthood in Israel; the ‘Servant of the Lord’ in relation to prediction was the Prophetic order. But all sprang from the same fundamental idea: that of the ‘Servant of Jehovah.’

As a servant opens the door or gate for his master and the guests to this master, Jesus opens the door for us to his Master, his God and our God. Though the servant can find everything at his hands in the masters house, he does not steal and takes care that everything stays in good order.

““The thief does not come except to steal, and to slaughter, and to destroy. I have come that they might possess life, and that they might possess it beyond measure. ““I am the door. Whoever enters through Me, he shall be saved, and shall go in and shall go out and find pasture. “The thief does not come except to steal, and to slaughter, and to destroy. I have come that they might possess life, and that they might possess it beyond measure. “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep. ” (John 10:9-11 The Scriptures 1998+)
“even as the Son of Aḏam did not come to be served, but to serve,1 and to give His life as a ransom for many.” Footnote:1See Mark 10:45 and Isa. 49:1-7. ” (Matthew 20:28 The Scriptures 1998+)

“For, let this mind be in you which was also in Messiah יהושע, who, being in the form of Elohim, did not regard equality with Elohim a matter to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant, and came to be in the likeness of men. And having been found in fashion as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient unto death, death even of a stake. Elohim, therefore, has highly exalted Him and given Him the Name which is above every name, that at the Name of יהושע every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and every tongue should confess that יהושע Messiah is Master, to the esteem of Elohim the Father. ” (Philippians 2:5-11 The Scriptures 1998+)

Though Jesus was the only Begotten of the Father (John 1:14), the Brightness of the Father’s glory (Hebrews 1:3), the Chosen (Matthew 12:18) and the Christ (Matthew 1:16) he wanted to be  a Consolation of Israel (Luke 2:25) and a  Counselor (Isaia 9:6), Friend (John 11:1-44) and even Brother (Hebrews 2:11). Though he expressed images of the Father (Hebrews 1:3) he wanted to be a Faithful Witness of Him (Revelation 1:5), being a Holy One of God (Mark 1:24) always under the Law of the Almighty One God and bringing others under that precious Law (Matthew 27:51; Romans 7:4; Ephesians 2:13-15), being sure that it was not him but the Holy Spirit of his Father who would bring the followers of him his teachings to their remembrance (John 14:26).

John the Baptist declares Jesus to be the Lamb of God, the baptizer with the Holy Spirit, and the Son of God (John 1:29-34 ). As a lamb Jesus was willing to be a sacrifice and to lay down his life as a Ransom (1Timothee 2:6), becoming the new Passover (1Corinthians 5:7), and because of that his Father loves him (Ephesians 5:2; John 10:17) and has taken him as a salvation and mediator for men (Luke 2:25-30; 1Timothee 2:5).

“For there is one Elohim,1 and one Mediator between Elohim and men, the Man Messiah יהושע, Footnote: 11 Cor. 8:6, Eph. 4:6, Mk. 12:29-34. ” (1 Timothy 2:5 The Scriptures 1998+)

God was willing to accept his son his offer and took the anointed up in heaven to sit at His right hand after He had raised up Jesus as the Saviour. By this Christ his action of giving himself to all humanity, as a humble servant Jesus will raise us up through His power. Jesus voluntarily yielded up his life when he knew that his suffering was completed (see John 19:30). It also implies that the divine nature of Christ was active in his resurrection: he was able to “take up” his life again, because he trusted fully in his Father.

“So when יהושע took the sour wine He said, “It has been accomplished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit. ” (John 19:30 The Scriptures 1998+)
“Truly, He has borne our sicknesses and carried our pains. Yet we reckoned Him stricken, smitten by Elohim, and afflicted. But He was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our crookednesses. The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed. We all, like sheep, went astray, each one of us has turned to his own way. And יהוה has laid on Him the crookedness of us all. He was oppressed and He was afflicted, but He did not open His mouth. He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before its shearers is silent, but He did not open His mouth. ” (Isaiah 53:4-7 The Scriptures 1998+)
“On the next day Yoḥanan saw יהושע {Jeshua} coming toward him, and said, “See, the Lamb of Elohim who takes away the sin of the world!1 Footnote: 1Mt. 1:21, Titus 2:14, 1 John 3:5 & 8. ” (John 1:29 The Scriptures 1998+)
“Therefore cleanse out the old leaven, so that you are a new lump, as you are unleavened. For also Messiah our Passover was offered for us. ” (1 Corinthians 5:7 The Scriptures 1998+)
“Therefore, having girded up the loins of your mind, being sober, set your expectation perfectly upon the favour that is to be brought to you at the revelation of יהושע Messiah, as obedient children, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts in your ignorance, instead, as the One who called you is set-apart, so you also should become set-apart in all behaviour, because it has been written, “Be set-apart, for I am set-apart.” And if you call on the Father, who without partiality judges according to each one’s work, pass the time of your sojourning in fear, knowing that you were redeemed from your futile way of life inherited from your fathers, not with what is corruptible, silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Messiah, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, foreknown, indeed, before the foundation of the world, but manifested in these last times for your sakes, who through Him believe in Elohim who raised Him from the dead and gave Him esteem, so that your belief and expectation are in Elohim. ” (1 Peter 1:13-21 The Scriptures 1998+)
“And I looked, and I heard the voice of many messengers around the throne, and the living creatures, and the elders. And the number of them was myriads of myriads, and thousands of thousands, saying with a loud voice, “Worthy is the Lamb having been slain to receive power and riches and wisdom, and strength and respect and esteem and blessing!” ” (Revelation 5:11-12 The Scriptures 1998+)

Jehovah God exalted his humble servant because he fulfilled all the works God wanted to be done on earth by him.

“For you shall not come out in haste, nor go in flight. For יהוה is going before you, and the Elohim of Yisra’ĕl is your rear guard. See, My Servant shall work wisely, He shall be exalted and lifted up and very high. As many were astonished at You – so the disfigurement beyond any man’s and His form beyond the sons of men – He shall likewise startle many nations. Sovereigns shut their mouths at Him, for what had not been recounted to them they shall see, and what they had not heard they shall understand. ” (Isaiah 52:12-15 The Scriptures 1998+)
“Who has believed our report? And to whom was the arm of יהוה revealed? For He grew up before Him as a tender plant, and as a root out of dry ground. He has no form or splendour that we should look upon Him, nor appearance that we should desire Him – despised and rejected by men, a man of pains and knowing sickness. And as one from whom the face is hidden, being despised, and we did not consider Him. Truly, He has borne our sicknesses and carried our pains. Therefore I give Him a portion among the great, and He divides the spoil with the strong, because He poured out His being unto death, and He was counted with the transgressors, and He bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors. ” (Isaiah 53:1-12 The Scriptures 1998+)

In case that we are willing to give our bodies to the Work of God and be members of Christ Jesus, as members of the body of Christ we should be joined as one and be of one spirit with Christ Jesus. Be fleeing every sin because this  is outside of the body and our body should be a temple of the Holy Spiritin us, which we have from God.

“And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were set apart, but you were declared right in the Name of the Master יהושע and by the Spirit of our Elohim. All is permitted me, but not all do profit. All is permitted me, but I shall not be under authority of any. Foods for the stomach and the stomach for foods – but Elohim shall destroy both it and them. And the body is not for whoring but for the Master, and the Master for the body. And Elohim, who raised up the Master, shall also raise us up through His power. Do you not know that your bodies are members of Messiah? Shall I then take the members of Messiah and make them members of a whore? Let it not be! Or do you not know that he who is joined to a whore is one body? For He says, “The two shall become one flesh.” And he who is joined to the Master is one spirit. Flee whoring. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits whoring sins against his own body. Or do you not know that your body is the Dwelling Place of the Set-apart Spirit who is in you, which you have from Elohim, and you are not your own? Also those who wanted to become big or important should know that they had first to be the lowest of all.

We ourselves should become as Christ. Being Christ does not mean that we are going to be God, as many think Jesus to be God, but it means being as the Servant Jesus, being child of the Father in heaven and being a seed in the hands of the Lord.

The Lord Jesus wants us, as his pupils, his branches, to be fruitful.

“In this My Father is esteemed, that you bear much fruit, and you shall be My taught ones. ” (John 15:8 The Scriptures 1998+)

Fruit is the result of developing life. Branches do not innately have that life in themselves. “The branch cannot bear fruit of itself.” Branches must always find their life in the vine. The vine, Jesus, has life.

“I am the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6). Our Lord came to share that life with us in abundance. “I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly” (Joh_10:10). His abundant life is what enables us to bear much fruit.

We should try to do as Jesus, our biggest and best example, and should strive to be simple and sincere toward all, seeking not to please and honour self, but the Lord. As Jesus has given us examples how to pray, to his Father and Our Father, and warned us to keep to the commandments having only One God, we should be careful with what and whom we associate, and be careful to honour the right person with our lips and actions, not being afraid of Christ Jesus.

As Jesus was the servant of his Father and people around him we should also be servants of the people around us and a servant for Christ and for God, faithful to the Lord, the Truth, the brethren and all with whom we have to do, not only in great matters, but also in the little things of life. We should as followers of Christ, becoming Christians have equality in love, so that we are as Brethren and sisters in Christ wanting to do things for each other, never being demanding and never having more than a master/servant relationship. We should all have the idea of equality in Christ. Secular society may not want to live up to the ideal of Christian equality, but the Christian community should certainly hold to that model. To be God’s person is not something one is in isolation from society, but it means to be Christ’s servant in community with mankind at large.

Brethren and Sisters in Christ or Christadelphians - Being one in Christ

No state, no condition of rank in life, is altogether exempt from being a servant. The King and the beggar have both their respective provinces in life; and as Solomon said, the profit of the earth is for all the King himself is served by the field.

“And the increase of the land is for all. The sovereign himself is served from the field.” (Ecclesiastes 5:9 The Scriptures 1998+)

We find God the Father speaking of Jesus the servant of God, when calling him by this name. “Behold my Servant, whom I uphold: mine Elect in whom my soul delighteth!” God has called the branch of David in righteousness, and will hold his hand, and will keep him, and give him for a Covenant of the people.

““See, My Servant whom I uphold, My Chosen One My being has delighted in! I have put My Spirit upon Him; He brings forth right-ruling to the nations. “He does not cry out, nor lifts up His voice, nor causes His voice to be heard in the street. “A crushed reed He does not break, and smoking flax He does not quench. He brings forth right-ruling in accordance with truth. “He does not become weak or crushed, until He has established right-ruling in the earth. And the coastlands wait for His Torah.” Thus said the Ěl, יהוה, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread forth the earth and that which comes from it, who gives breath to the people on it, and spirit to those who walk on it: “I, יהוה, have called You in righteousness, and I take hold of Your hand and guard You, and give You for a covenant to a people, for a light to the gentiles, to open blind eyes, to bring out prisoners from the prison, those who sit in darkness from the prison house. “I am יהוה {Jehovah}, that is My Name, and My esteem I do not give to another, nor My praise to idols. ” (Isaiah 42:1-8 The Scriptures 1998+)

Jesus was humbly enough to tell people all things he did, he did by the hand of God. He has been trustworthy over a small part of the world, the Land of God’s People. Are we willing to be placed as him, being a servant, responsible over a relatively  few things,  so we will be placed later over many things? The conduct of us as servants  of others, servants of Christ and as servants of God shall be determining to enter the Kingdom of God. We also should be prepared to be ready at any moment of the day to be there to be the servant for the returning Master who was only Servant of God.

God has given us Christ on earth, so we can serve him here on earth as the representative of God. By going for Christ we can serve God, but than we cannot be a servant of the world at the same time or be dependant of material things  at the same time. The person who loves his earthly life will eventually  lose it forever,  but the person who hates his life in this world will retain never ending life. If any person wants to serve Christ,  he should become his follower;  and wherever he is,  his servant will be there also.  If any person serves him,  the Father will honour him.

““And his master said to him, ‘Well done, good and trustworthy servant. You were trustworthy over a little, I shall set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’ ” (Matthew 25:21 The Scriptures 1998+)
““No servant is able to serve two masters, for either he shall hate the one and love the other, or else he shall cling to the one and despise the other. You are not able to serve Elohim and mammon.” And the Pharisees, who loved silver, also heard all this, and were sneering at Him, so He said to them, “You are those who declare yourselves righteous before men, but Elohim knows your hearts, because what is highly thought of among men is an abomination in the sight of Elohim. “The Torah and the prophets are until Yoḥanan. Since then the reign of Elohim is being announced, and everyone is doing violence upon it. “And it is easier for the heaven and the earth to pass away than for one tittle of the Torah to fall. ” (Luke 16:13-17 The Scriptures 1998+)
““Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone. But if it dies, it bears much fruit. “He who loves his life shall lose it, and he who hates his life in this world shall preserve it for everlasting life. “If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me. And where I am, there My servant also shall be. If anyone serves Me, the Father shall value him. ” (John 12:24-26 The Scriptures 1998+)

Trusting ourself to Divine care and the Providential overruling of all our interests for our highest welfare, we should seek not only to be pure in heart, but to repel all anxiety, all discontent, all discouragement, neither murmuring nor repine at what the Lord’s providence may permit, because “Faith can firmly trust Him, Come what may.”

Are we willing to become like Christ, a servant of God? And be willing to prepare for the coming of the greatest servant of all? Being as brides to Christ? Or do we want to be called to the marriage of the Lamb of God Jesus Christ?  Willing to walk as servants in the light of Christ, being just a shadow?

Fragments from the Book of Job #4: chapters 27-31

In the previous chapters the rampant evil in the world was described by Job (Job 24:2-24) and we have heard the speeches of Job’s friends who got to accuse him of gaining his now lost wealth by robbing the poor, withholding sustenance from the hungry and even abusing the weaker ones like widows and orphans. (Eliphaz, the most sympathetic and likely the oldest who appeals to experience for authority, in Job 22:6-9). Eliphaz urged Job to submit to obvious discipline from God, who would bless him if he would repent (Job 5:8-27).  For the less sensitive Bildad it was clear that Job and his children were suffering because of his sin (Job 8:1-7). As Bildad argued from tradition, the third friend, Zophar rested on orthodox dogma and argued also that there must have been something in Job’s live that had caused all those problems.

Since neither Job nor his wife knew what had transpired between God and His adversaries,  they did not know that those adversaries predicted that Job would curse God (Job 1:11; 2:5). Job at certain moments thought that there was a problem with him and God. His wife even concluded that her husband and she were suffering because God was unfair and that the presupposition that God always blesses the righteous and afflicts the wicked has proven faulty. Job called her views foolishness and did not want to curse God (Job 2:9-10) but after some time also wrongly accused God of mauling him as would a beast (Job 16:9) turning him over to wicked or perverse men, evil people  (Job 16:11) using him as would an archer for target practice (Job 16:12-13) and attacking him as would a warrior  or like a soldier gone mad with hate (Job 16:14). Job was sad he did not receive an answer from God who had seemed to have wronged him (Job 19:6) because he had kept to God’s Law (contrary to Eliphaz’s charge Job 22:22). He also complained that God did not pay attention and does not have fixed times for the punishment of evildoers, so that people could see that the Almighty Elohim punishes evildoers (Job 24:1,12). But he recognises the sovereignty of Jehovah over the various aspects of the universe. (Job 26:5-13) Gods knowledge goes beyond what we can see and hear (Job 26:14).

Many blame God, but for an other reason than Job did (Job 24:1) for the troubles on this earth, and has Job friends they do not seem to see the underlying factors of men’s free will. Also Job gets the feeling that his sufferings are in the Will of God, though the thought troubles him. (Job 23:14-16) He has also difficulties with ancient teachings or traditions, which or not our best sources of knowledge, according to Job. (Job 9:1-10:22) Those who brought us some sources to think about are just as mortal as we are and we always should remember that they grasped perhaps only a part of reality.Who can discover the depth of God? (Job 11:7) Job recognises that he is not inferior to others who have more luck, and that with the others their wisdom shall die as well. (Job 12:2-3, 12-22, 2425; 13:2,4, 8-11; 14:10; 15:9-11, 18-22,31-32)

For Job as for us it seems that at certain moments of trouble, wherever we go we do not seem to find God and therefore could not present our case before the Almighty. (Job 23:8-9) In Fragments from the Book of Job #2: chapters 12-20 a light is already shed on the fact that God knows the way we take. (Job 23:10) We would love to see the evil of the evil-doer come to an end, and find an end to our misery. Sometimes we may think God does not care for us and does not watches us. But God keeps an eye on the world and follows it. In the Old Testament we do find enough examples how He at certain moments came in action and reacted to situation of which He did not agree with. We can also notice how He also gave strength to the upright. At any time men’s minds and hearts are tested by the God of righteousness. Jehovah puts the upright and the sinner to the test, but He has hate in his soul for the lover of violent acts.  (Psalms 7:9; 11:5) “For you, O God, have proven us: you have tried us, as silver is tried.” (Psalms 66:10 KJBPNV) Remember: “And it shall come to pass, that in all the land, saith Jehovah, two parts therein shall be cut off and die; but the third shall be left therein. And I will bring the third part into the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried. They shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people; and they shall say, Jehovah is my God.” (Zechariah 13:8-9 ASV)

Job’s innocence cries for vindication and asks God not to hide the wrongs done to him. (Job 16:18-21) Like Job we can long for a divine helper (cf 1 John 2:1-2) today we have an advocate with the Father. This comforter is Gods son given to us to help see our ways. this is a better friend than those of Job and a real upright helper. He can plead our case by his Father. In chapter 19 of the Book Job, Fragments from the Book of Job #2: chapters 12-20, we could notice that Job believed in a living god who would vindicate his case even after his death. In the future on the earth. The dust, sand  or earth mentioned is referring to the dust of the earth or to the dust of Job’s grave. (Job 19:25-27)
“For I know that my redeemer lives, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth: And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God: Whom I shall see for myself, and my eyes shall behold, and not another; though my reins be consumed within me.” (Job 19:25-27 KJBPNV) We may look forward to Jesus who shall return to the earth and shall look onto what people have done to each other and how they kept to the commandments of God. He shall judge the people before he hands over the Kingdomto his Father.

Though Job looks at Jehovah or Yahweh Yahweh as the redeemer (Heb “goel”) of His people, the Almighty is that one who took care that somebody could speak in the name of men. He first did that with his people in Egypt. “Wherefore say unto the children of Israel, I am Jehovah, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will rid you out of their bondage, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm, and with great judgments:” (Exodus 6:6 ASV)
There is much speculation as to whether Job believed in the resurrection. However we note that Jesus, quoting Job’s words (Matthew 5:8) says that the meek will see God and clearly Jesus is speaking of the blessedness of those who are to be raised from the dead. (Read also: Zechariah 14:1-4,9,16; Isaiah 9:6-7;2:2-4; Matthew 24:3,36,37,44).

Looking for a kinsman-redeemer, ransom, avenge, vindicator, a “daysman” or a mediator Job looked like so many of us a means to obtain justice. That is the theme in these verses of Job 19:25-27, not resurrection, as we gather when we first read them. True justice would demand his bodily presence. Resurrection is thus implied rather than expressed. Job felt that at the resurrection he would be justified. The word flesh Hebrew basar (1320) means flesh, body, person, body, self, etc. while Job 31:14 suggests being called to account at an implied judgement .

“Behold, a day of Jehovah cometh, when thy spoil shall be divided in the midst of thee. For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city. Then shall Jehovah go forth, and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle. And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east; and the mount of Olives shall be cleft in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south.” (Zechariah 14:1-4 ASV)

Job sees death as certain “worms destroy this body” (Job 16:22;17:1,14,15,16), “yet in my flesh shall I see God” (Job 14:13-15 – resurrection Gen 13:15) indicates flesh is regenerated; Job’s redeemer is Jehovah (Isaiah 43:14-15;49:7;54:5) Some people take it from there that Jehovah would be the same person as that redeemer Jesus, but Job spoke about the Spirit who was alive in his time. Thus Job was correct when he said his redeemer “liveth” because has always been alive and people forget that Jehovah has redeemed through his servant, the Lord Jesus Christ (Isaiah 49:6-7; Acts 5:31; Hebrews 7:25; 2 Timothy 1:10). Unfortunately, Job does not expound upon this ‘matter of the future’, and so we are left with an incomplete understanding of what he meant. However, Job is accounted righteous, and an example to follow (Ezekiel 14:14,26; James 5:11) and from that we can imagine that he is going to be one of the persons who shall also be in the coming Kingdom of God.

The sarcastic part of Job comes forward now. In Job 27: 7-23 we get Job’s summary of the erroneous arguments of his 3 friends — who urged his guilt. Job talks here as though his three ‘friends’ are trying to persuade him to fall from grace and to fulfil their words as if they were some sort of prophecy against him. Should we not recognise that it in fact not always  the wicked ultimately prosper, though they may for a time. Whatever happens and how long it takes we can be sure that they will be condemned (Job 27:8). They shall not have to count on the help of God (Job 237:9-10).  We nor they can be assured of passing on their prosperity to their children (Job 27:14-18). Who knows, destruction can come suddenly over the evil man (Job 27:19).

Job 27:22 And [God] shall cast [trouble] upon him, and not spare: he would fain flee out of his hand.
Job 27:23 He shall cause [men] to clap their hands against them, and shall hiss him out of his place.


Job 28:1 For there is a place for the silver, whence it comes, and a place for the gold, whence it is refined.
Job 28:2 For iron comes out of the earth, and brass is hewn out like stone.
Job 28:3 He has set a bound to darkness, and he searches out every limit: a stone [is] darkness, and the shadow of death.
Job 28:4 There is a cutting off the torrent by reason of dust: so they that forget the right way are weakened; they are removed from [among] men.
Job 28:5 [As for] the earth, out of it shall come bread: under it has been turned up as it were fire.
Job 28:6 Her stones are the place of the sapphire: and [her] dust [supplies] man with gold.

Job 28:7 [There is] a path, the fowl has not known it, neither has the eye of the vulture seen it:
Job 28:8 neither have the sons of the proud trodden it, a lion has not passed upon it.

Job 28:9 He has stretched forth his hand on the sharp [rock], and turned up mountains by the roots:
Job 28:10 and he has interrupted the whirlpools of rivers, and mine eye has seen every precious thing.
Job 28:11 And he has laid bare the depths of rivers, and has brought his power to light.
Job 28:12 But whence has wisdom been discovered? and what is the place of knowledge?
Job 28:13 A mortal has not known its way, neither indeed has it been discovered among men.
Job 28:14 The depth said, It is not in me: and the sea said, It is not with me.
Job 28:15 One shall not give fine gold instead of it, neither shall silver be weighed in exchange for it.
Job 28:16 Neither shall it be compared with gold of Sophir, with the precious onyx and sapphire.
Job 28:17 Gold and crystal shall not be equalled to it, neither shall vessels of gold be its exchange.
Job 28:18 Coral and fine pearl shall not be mentioned: but do thou esteem wisdom above the most precious things.
Job 28:19 The topaz of Ethiopia shall not be equalled to it; it shall not be compared with pure gold.
Job 28:20 Whence then is wisdom found? and of what kind is the place of understanding?
Job 28:21 It has escaped the notice of every man, and has been hidden from the birds of the sky.
Job 28:22 Destruction and Death said, We have heard the report of it.

Job 28:23 God has well ordered the way of it, and he knows the place of it.
Job 28:24 For he surveys the whole [earth] under heaven, knowing the things in the earth:
Job 28:25 all that he has made; the weight of the winds, the measures of the water.
Job 28:26 When he made [them], thus he saw and numbered them, and made a way for the pealing of the thunder.
Job 28:27 Then he saw it, and declared it: he prepared it [and] traced it out.
Job 28:28 And he said to man, Behold, godliness is wisdom: and to abstain from evil is understanding.


Job 29:1 And Job continued and said in his parable,
Job 29:2 Oh that I were as in months past, wherein God preserved me!
Job 29:3 As when his lamp shone over my head; when by his light I walked through darkness.
Job 29:4 [As] when I steadfastly pursued my ways, when God took care of my house.
Job 29:5 When I was very fruitful, and my children were about me;
Job 29:6 when my ways were moistened with butter, and the mountains flowed for me with milk.
Job 29:7 When I went forth early in the city, and the seat was placed for me in the streets.
Job 29:8 The young men saw me, and hid themselves: and all the old men stood up.
Job 29:9 And the great men ceased speaking, and laid their finger on their mouth.
Job 29:10 And they that heard [me] blessed me, and their tongue clave to their throat.
Job 29:11 For the ear heard, and blessed me; and the eye saw me, and turned aside.

Job 29:12 For I saved the poor out of the hand of the oppressor, and helped the fatherless who had no helper.

Job 29:13 Let the blessing of the perishing one come upon me; yea, the mouth of the widow has blessed me.
Job 29:14 Also I put on righteousness, and clothed myself with judgment like a mantle.
Job 29:15 I was the eye of the blind, and the foot of the lame.
Job 29:16 I was the father of the helpless; and I searched out the cause which I knew not.
Job 29:17 And I broke the jaw-teeth of the unrighteous; I plucked the spoil out of the midst of their teeth.
Job 29:18 And I said, My age shall continue as the stem of a palm-tree; I shall live a long while.
Job 29:19 [My] root was spread out by the water, and the dew would lodge on my crop.
Job 29:20 My glory was fresh in me, and by bow prospered in his hand.

Job 29:21 [Men] heard me, and gave heed, and they were silent at my counsel.
Job 29:22 At my word they spoke not again, and they were very gland whenever I spoke to them.
Job 29:23 As the thirsty earth expecting the rain, so they [waited for] my speech.
Job 29:24 Were I to laugh on them, they would not believe [it]; and the light of my face has not failed.
Job 29:25 I chose out their way, and sat chief, and dwelt as a king in the midst of warriors, as one comforting mourners.


Job 30:1 But now the youngest have laughed me to scorn, now they reprove me in [their] turn, whose fathers I set at nought; whom I did not deem worthy [to be with] my shepherd dogs.
Job 30:2 Yea, why had I the strength of their hands? for them the full term [of life] was lost.

Job 30:3 [One is] childless in want and famine, [such as] they that fled but lately the distress and misery of drought.
Job 30:4 Who compass the salt places on the sounding [shore], who had salt [herbs] for their food, and were dishonorable and of no repute, in want of every good thing; who also ate roots of trees by reason of great hunger.

Job 30:5 Thieves have risen up against me,
Job 30:6 whose houses were the caves of the rocks, who lived under the wild shrubs.
Job 30:7 They will cry out among the rustling [bushes].
Job 30:8 [They are] sons of fools and vile men, [whose] name and glory [are] quenched from off the earth.
Job 30:9 But now I am their music, and they have me for a by-word.
Job 30:10 And they stood aloof and abhorred me, and spared not to spit in my face.

Job 30:11 For he has opened his quiver and afflicted me: they also have cast off the restraint of my presence.

Job 30:12 They have risen up against [me] on the right hand of [their] offspring; they have stretched out their foot, and directed against me the ways of their destruction.
Job 30:13 My paths are ruined; for they have stripped off my raiment: he has shot at me with his weapons.

Job 30:14 And he has pleaded against me as he will: I am overwhelmed with pains.
Job 30:15 My pains return upon [me]; my hope is gone like the wind, and my safety as a cloud.
Job 30:16 Even now my life shall be poured forth upon me; and days of anguish seize me.
Job 30:17 And by night my bones are confounded; and my sinews are relaxed.
Job 30:18 With great force [my disease] has taken hold of my garment: it has compassed me as the collar of my coat.
Job 30:19 And thou hast counted me as clay; my portion in dust and ashes.
Job 30:20 And I have cried to thee, but thou hearest me not: but they stood still, and observed me.
Job 30:21 They attacked me also without mercy: thou hast scourged me with a strong hand.
Job 30:22 And thou hast put me to grief, and hast cast me away from safety.

Job 30:23 For I know that death will destroy me: for the earth is the house [appointed] for every mortal.
Job 30:24 Oh then that I might lay hands upon myself, or at least ask another, and he should do this for me.
Job 30:25 Yet I wept over every helpless man; I groaned when I saw a man in distress.
Job 30:26 But I, when I waited for good things, behold, days of evils came the more upon me.
Job 30:27 My belly boiled, and would not cease: the days of poverty prevented me.
Job 30:28 I went mourning without restraint: and I have stood and cried out in the assembly.
Job 30:29 I am become a brother of monsters, and a companion of ostriches.
Job 30:30 And my skin has been greatly blackened, and my bones are burned with heat.
Job 30:31 My harp also has been turned into mourning, and my song into my weeping.


Job 31:1 I made a covenant with mine eyes, and I will not think upon a virgin.
Job 31:2 Now what portion has God given from above? and is there an inheritance [given] of the Mighty One from the highest?

Job 31:3 Alas! destruction to the unrighteous, and rejection to them that do iniquity.
Job 31:4 Will he not see my way, and number all my steps?
Job 31:5 But if I had gone with scorners, and if too my foot has hasted to deceit:
Job 31:6 (for I am weighed in a just balance, and the Lord knows my innocence:
Job 31:7 if my foot has turned aside out of the way, or if mine heart has followed mine eye, and if too I have touched gifts with my hands;
Job 31:8 then let me sow, and let others eat; and let me be uprooted on the earth.

Job 31:9 If my heart has gone forth after another man’s wife, and if I laid wait at her doors;
Job 31:10 then let my wife also please another, and let my children be brought low.
Job 31:11 For the rage of anger is not to be controlled, [in the case] of defiling [another] man’s wife.
Job 31:12 For it is a fire burning on every side, and whomsoever it attacks, it utterly destroys.

Job 31:13 And if too I despised the judgment of my servant or [my] handmaid, when they pleaded with me;
Job 31:14 what then shall I do if the Lord should try me? and if also he should at all visit me, can I make an answer?
Job 31:15 Were not they too formed as I also was formed in the womb? yea, we were formed in the same womb.
Job 31:16 But the helpless missed not whatever need they had, and I did not cause the eye of the widow to fail.

Job 31:17 And if too I ate my morsel alone, and did not impart [of it] to the orphan;
Job 31:18 (for I nourished [them] as a father from my youth and guided [them] from my mother’s womb.)

Job 31:19 And if too I overlooked the naked as he was perishing, and did not clothe him;
Job 31:20 and if the poor did not bless me, and their shoulders were [not] warmed with the fleece of my lambs;

Job 31:21 if I lifted my hand against an orphan, trusting that my strength was far superior [to his]:
Job 31:22 let them my shoulder start from the blade-bone, and my arm be crushed off from the elbow.
Job 31:23 For the fear of the Lord constrained me, and I cannot bear up by reason of his burden.

Job 31:24 If I made gold my treasure, and if too I trusted the precious stone;
Job 31:25 and if too I rejoiced when my wealth was abundant, and if too I laid my hand on innumerable [treasures]:
Job 31:26 (do we not see the shining sun eclipsed, and the moon waning? for they have not [power to continue]:)
Job 31:27 and if my heart was secretly deceived, and if I have laid my hand upon my mouth and kissed it:
Job 31:28 let this also then be reckoned to me as the greatest iniquity: for I [should] have lied against the Lord Most High.

Job 31:29 And if too I was glad at the fall of mine enemies, and mine heart said, Aha!
Job 31:30 let then mine ear hear my curse, and let me be a byword among my people in my affliction.

Job 31:31 And if too my handmaids have often said, Oh that we might be satisfied with his flesh; (whereas I was very kind:
Job 31:32 for the stranger did not lodge without, and my door was opened to every one that came:
Job 31:33 or if too having sinned unintentionally, I hid my sin;
Job 31:34 (for I did not stand in awe of a great multitude, so as not to declare boldly before them: ) and if too I permitted a poor man to go out of my door with an empty bosom:
Job 31:35 (Oh that I had a hearer,) and if I had not feared the hand of the Lord; and [as to] the written charge which I had against any one,
Job 31:36 I would place [it] as a chaplet on my shoulders, and read it.
Job 31:37 And if I did not read it and return it, having taken nothing from the debtor:
Job 31:38 If at any time the land groaned against me, and if its furrows mourned together;
Job 31:39 and if I ate its strength alone without price, and if I too grieved the heart of the owner of the soil, by taking [aught] from [him]:
Job 31:40 then let the nettle come up to me instead of wheat, and a bramble instead of barley. And Job ceased speaking.

Job Chapters 1-12

Job 1:1 There was a certain man in the land of Ausis, whose name [was] Job; and than man was true, blameless, righteous, [and] godly, abstaining from everything evil.
Job 1:2 And he had seven sons and three daughters.
Job 1:3 And his cattle consisted of seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen, five hundred she-asses in the pastures, and a very great household, and he had a great husbandry on the earth; and that man was [most] noble of the [men] of the east.

Job 1:6 And it came to pass on a day, that behold, the angels of God came to stand before the Lord, and the devil (the adversary) came with them.
Job 1:7 And the Lord said to the devil, Whence art thou come? And the devil answered the Lord, and said, I am come from compassing the earth, and walking up and down in the world.
Job 1:8 And the Lord said to him, Hast thou diligently considered my servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a man blameless, true, godly, abstaining from everything evil?
Job 1:9 Then the devil answered, and said before the Lord, Does Job worship the Lord for nothing?
Job 1:10 Hast thou not made a hedge about him, and about his household, and all his possessions round about? and hast thou not blessed the works of his hands, and multiplied his cattle upon the land?
Job 1:11 But put forth thine hand, and touch all that he has: verily he will bless thee to [thy] face.
Job 1:12 Then the Lord said to the devil, Behold, I give into thine hand all that he has, but touch not himself. So the devil went out from the presence of the Lord.

Job 1:20 So Job arose, and rent his garments, and shaved the hair of his head, and fell on the earth, and worshipped,
Job 1:21 and said, I myself came forth naked from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return thither; the Lord gave, the Lord has taken away: as it seemed good to the Lord, so has it come to pass; blessed be the name of the Lord.
Job 1:22 In all these events that befell him Job sinned not at all before the Lord, and did not impute folly to God.


Job 2:1 And it came to pass on a certain day, that the angels of God came to stand before the Lord, and the devil came among them to stand before the Lord.
Job 2:2 And the Lord, said to the devil, Whence comest thou? Then the devil said before the Lord, I (the evil) am come from going through the world, and walking about the whole earth.
Job 2:3 And the Lord said to the devil, Hast thou then observed my servant Job, that there is none of [men] upon the earth like him, a harmless, true, blameless, godly man, abstaining from all evil? and he yet cleaves to innocence, whereas thou has told [me] to destroy his substance without cause?
Job 2:4 And the devil answered and said to the Lord, Skin for skin, all that a man has will he give as a ransom for his life.
Job 2:5 Nay, but put forth thine hand, and touch his bones and his flesh: verily he will bless thee to [thy] face.
Job 2:6 And the Lord said to the devil, Behold, I deliver him up to thee; only save his life.
Job 2:7 So the devil went out from the Lord, and smote Job with sore boils from [his] feet to [his] head.

Job 2:10 …Thou hast spoken like one of the foolish women. If we have received good things of the hand of the Lord, shall we not endure evil things? In all these things that happened to him, Job sinned not at all with his lips before God.

Job 3:1 After this Job opened his mouth, and cursed his day,
Job 3:2 saying,
Job 3:3 Let the day perish in which I was born, and that night in which they said, Behold a man-child!
Job 3:4 Let that night be darkness, and let not the Lord regard it from above, neither let light come upon it.
Job 3:5 But let darkness and the shadow of death seize it; let blackness come upon it;
Job 3:6 let that day and night be cursed, let darkness carry them away; let it not come into the days of the year, neither let it be numbered with the days of the months.
Job 3:7 But let that night be pain, and let not mirth come upon it, nor joy.
Job 3:8 But let him that curses that day curse it, [even] he that is ready to attack the great whale.
Job 3:9 Let the stars of that night be darkened; let it remain [dark], and not come into light; and let it not see the morning star arise:
Job 3:10 because it shut not up the gates of my mother’s womb, for [so] it would have removed sorrow from my eyes.
Job 3:11 For why died I not in the belly? and [why] did I not come forth from the womb and die immediately?
Job 3:12 and why did the knees support me? and why did I suck the breasts?
Job 3:13 Now I should have lain down and been quiet, I should have slept and been at rest,
Job 3:14 with kings [and] councillors of the earth, who gloried in [their] swords;
Job 3:15 or with rulers, whose gold was abundant, who filled their houses with silver:
Job 3:16 or [I should have been] as an untimely birth proceeding from his mother’s womb, or as infants who never saw light.
Job 3:17 There the ungodly have burnt out the fury of rage; there the wearied in body rest.

Job 3:23 Death [is] rest to [such] a man, for God has hedged him in.
Job 3:24 For my groaning comes before my food, and I weep being beset with terror.
Job 3:25 For the terror of which I meditated has come upon me, and that which I had feared has befallen me.
Job 3:26 I was not at peace, nor quiet, nor had I rest; yet wrath came upon me.


Job 4:5 Yet now [that] pain has come upon thee, and touched thee, thou art troubled.
Job 4:6 Is not thy fear [founded] in folly, thy hope also, and the mischief of thy way?
Job 4:7 Remember then who has perished, being pure? or when were the true-hearted utterly destroyed?
Job 4:8 Accordingly as I have seen men ploughing barren places, and they that sow them will reap sorrows for themselves.
Job 4:9 They shall perish by the command of the Lord, and shall be utterly consumed by the breath of his wrath.

Job 4:13 But [as when] terror falls upon men, with dread and a sound in the night,
Job 4:14 horror and trembling seized me, and caused all my bones greatly to shake.
Job 4:15 And a spirit came before my face; and my hair and flesh quivered.
Job 4:16 I arose and perceived it not: I looked, and there, was no form before my eyes: but I only heard a breath and a voice, [saying],
Job 4:17 What, shall a mortal be pure before the Lord? or a man be blameless in regard to his works?
Job 4:18 Whereas he trust not in his servants, and perceives perverseness in his angels.
Job 4:19 But [as for] them that dwell in houses of clay, of whom we also are formed of the same clay, he smites them like a moth.
Job 4:20 And from the morning to evening they no longer exist: they have perished, because they cannot help themselves.
Job 4:21 For he blows upon them, and they are withered: they have perished for lack of wisdom.


Job 5:1 But call, if any one will hearken to thee, or if thou shalt see any of the holy angels.
Job 5:2 For wrath destroys the foolish one, and envy slays him that has gone astray.
Job 5:3 And I have seen foolish ones taking root: but suddenly their habitation was devoured.
Job 5:4 Let their children be far from safety, and let them be crushed at the doors of vile men, and let there be no deliverer.
Job 5:5 For what they have collected, the just shall eat; but they shall not be delivered out of calamities: let their strength be utterly exhausted.
Job 5:6 For labour cannot by any means come out of the earth, nor shall trouble spring out of the mountains:
Job 5:7 yet man is born to labour, and [even so] the vulture’s young seek the high places.
Job 5:8 Nevertheless I will beseech the Lord, and will call upon the Lord, the sovereign of all;
Job 5:9 who does great things and untraceable, glorious things also, and marvellous, of which there is no number:
Job 5:10 who gives rain upon the earth, sending water on the earth:
Job 5:11 who exalts the lowly, and raises up them that are lost:
Job 5:12 frustrating the counsels of the crafty, and their hands shall not perform the truth:
Job 5:13 who takes the wise in their wisdom, and subverts the counsel of the crafty
Job 5:14 In the day darkness shall come upon them, and let them grope in the noon-day even as in the night:
Job 5:15 and let them perish in war, and let the weak escape from the hand of the mighty.
Job 5:16 And let the weak have hope, but the mouth of the unjust be stopped.

Job 5:17 But blessed [is] the man whom the Lord has reproved; and reject not thou the chastening of the Almighty.
Job 5:18 for he causes [a man] to be in pain, and restores [him] again: he smites, and his hands heal.
Job 5:19 Six time he shall deliver thee out of distresses: and in the seventh harm shall not touch thee.
Job 5:20 In famine he shall deliver thee from death: and in war he shall free thee from the power of the sword.
Job 5:21 He shall hide thee from the scourge of the tongue: and thou shalt not be afraid of coming evils.


Job 6:1 But Job answered and said,
Job 6:2 Oh that one would indeed weigh the wrath that is upon me, and take up my griefs in a balance together!
Job 6:3 And verily they would be heavier than the sand by the seashore: but, as it seems, my words are vain.
Job 6:4 For the arrows of the Lord are in my body, whose violence drinks up my blood: whenever I am going to speak, they pierce me.
Job 6:5 What then? will the wild ass bray for nothing, if he is not seeking food? or again, will the ox low at the manger, when he has a fodder?
Job 6:6 Shall bread be eaten without salt? or again, is there taste in empty words?
Job 6:7 For my wrath cannot cease; for I perceive my food as the smell of a lion [to be] loathsome.
Job 6:8 For oh that he would grant [my desire], and my petition might come, and the Lord would grant my hope!

Job 6:9 Let the Lord begin and wound me, but let him not utterly destroy me.
Job 6:10 Let the grave be my city, upon the walls of which I have leaped: I will not shrink from it; for I have not denied the holy words of my God.
Job 6:11 For what is my strength, that I continue? what is my time, that my soul endures?
Job 6:12 Is my strength the strength of stones? or is my flesh of brass?
Job 6:13 Or have I not trusted in him? but help is [far] from me.
Job 6:14 Mercy has rejected me; and the visitation of the Lord has disregarded me.
Job 6:15 My nearest relations have not regarded me; they have passed me by like a failing brook, or like a wave.
Job 6:16 They who used to reverence me, now have come against me like snow or congealed ice.
Job 6:17 When it has melted at the approach of heat, it is not known what it was.
Job 6:18 Thus I also have been deserted of all; and I am ruined, and become an outcast.


Job 7:1 Is not the life of man upon earth a state of trial? and his existence as that of a hireling by the day?
Job 7:2 Or as a servant that fears his master, and one who has grasped a shadow? or as a hireling waiting for his pay?
Job 7:3 So have I also endured months of vanity, and nights of pain have been appointed me.
Job 7:4 Whenever I lie down, I say, When [will it be] day? and whenever I rise up, again [I say] when [will it be] evening? and I am full of pains from evening to morning.
Job 7:5 And my body is covered with loathsome worms; and I waste away, scraping off clods of dust from my eruption.
Job 7:6 And my life is lighter than a word, and has perished in vain hope.
Job 7:7 Remember then that my life is breath, and mine eye shalt not yet again see good.
Job 7:8 The eye of him that sees me shall not see me [again]: thine eyes are upon me, and I am no more.
Job 7:9 [I am] as a cloud that is cleared away from the sky: for if a man go down to the grave, he shall not come up again:
Job 7:10 and he shall surely not return to his own house, neither shall his place know him any more.
Job 7:11 Then neither will I refrain my mouth: I will speak being in distress; being in anguish I will disclose the bitterness of my soul.
Job 7:12 Am I a sea, or a serpent, that thou hast set a watch over me?

Job 7:16 For I shall not live for ever, that I should patiently endure: depart from me, for my life [is] vain.
Job 7:17 For what is man, that thou hast magnified him? or that thou givest heed to him?
Job 7:18 Wilt thou visit him till the morning, and judge him till [the time of] rest?
Job 7:19 How long dost thou not let me alone, nor let me go, until I shall swallow down my spittle?
Job 7:20 If I have sinned, what shall I be able to do, O thou that understandest the mind of men? why hast thou made me as thine accuser, and [why] am I a burden to thee?
Job 7:21 Why hast thou not forgotten my iniquity, and purged my sin? but now I shall depart to the earth; and in the morning I am no more.


Job 8:3 Will the Lord be unjust when he judges; or will he that has made all things pervert justice?
Job 8:4 If thy sons have sinned before him, he has cast them away because of their transgression.
Job 8:5 But be thou early in prayer to the Lord Almighty.
Job 8:6 If thou art pure and true, he will hearken to thy supplication, and will restore to thee the habitation of righteousness.
Job 8:7 Though then thy beginning should be small, yet thy end should be unspeakably great.
Job 8:8 For ask of the former generation, and search diligently among the race of [our] fathers:
Job 8:9 (for we are of yesterday, and know nothing; for our life upon the earth is a shadow:)
Job 8:10 shall not these teach thee, and report [to thee], and bring out words from [their] heart?

Job 8:18 If [God] should destroy [him], his place shall deny him. Hast thou not seen such things,
Job 8:19 that such is the overthrow of the ungodly? and out of the earth another shall grow.
Job 8:20 For the Lord will by no means reject the harmless man; but he will not receive any gift of the ungodly.
Job 8:21 But he will fill with laughter the mouth of the sincere, and their lips with thanksgiving.
Job 8:22 But their adversaries shall clothe themselves with shame; and the habitation of the ungodly shall perish.


Job 9:1 Then Job answered and said,
Job 9:2 I know of a truth that it is so: for how shall a mortal man be just before the Lord?
Job 9:3 For if he would enter into judgment with him, [God] would not hearken to him, so that he should answer to one of his charges of a thousand.
Job 9:4 For he is wise in mind, and mighty, and great: who has hardened himself against him and endured?
Job 9:5 Who wears out the mountains, and [men] know it not: who overturns them in anger.
Job 9:6 Who shakes the [earth] under heaven from its foundations, and its pillars totter.
Job 9:7 Who commands the sun, and it rises not; and he seals up the stars.
Job 9:8 Who alone has stretched out the heavens, and walks on the sea as on firm ground.
Job 9:9 Who makes Pleias, and Hesperus, and Arcturus, and the chambers of the south.
Job 9:10 Who does great and unsearchable things; glorious also and excellent things, innumerable.

Job 9:11 If ever he should go beyond me, I shall not see him: if he should pass by me, neither thus have I known [it].
Job 9:12 If he would take away, who shall turn him back? or who shall say to him, What hast thou done?
Job 9:13 For [if] he has turned away [his] anger, the whales under heaven have stooped under him.
Job 9:14 Oh then that he would hearken to me, or judge my cause.

Job 9:19 For indeed he is strong in power: who then shall resist his judgment?

Job 9:22 Wherefore I said, Wrath slays the great and mighty man.
Job 9:23 For the worthless die, but the righteous are laughed to scorn.
Job 9:24 For they are delivered into the hands of the unrighteous [man]: he covers the faces of the judges [of the earth]: but if it be not he, who is it?

Job 9:33 Would that [he] our mediator were [present], and a reprover, and one who should hear [the cause] between both.
Job 9:34 Let him remove [his] rod from me, and let not his fear terrify me:
Job 9:35 so shall I not be afraid, but I will speak: for I am not thus conscious [of guilt].


Job 10:3 Is it good before thee if I be unrighteous? for thou hast disowned the work of thy hands, and attended to the counsel of the ungodly.
Job 10:4 Or dost thou see as a mortal sees? or wilt thou look as a man sees?
Job 10:5 Or is thy life human, or thy years [the years] of a man,
Job 10:6 that thou hast enquired into mine iniquity, and searched out my sins?
Job 10:7 For thou knowest that I have not committed iniquity: but who is he that can deliver out of thy hands?

Job 10:8 Thy hands have formed me and made me; afterwards thou didst change [thy mind], and smite me.
Job 10:9 Remember that thou hast made me [as] clay, and thou dost turn me again to earth.

Job 10:10 Hast thou not poured me out like milk, and curdled me like cheese?
Job 10:11 And thou didst clothe me with skin and flesh, and frame me with bones and sinews.
Job 10:12 And thou didst bestow upon me life and mercy, and thy oversight has preserved my spirit.
Job 10:13 Having these things in thyself, I know that thou canst do all things; for nothing is impossible with thee.

Job 10:14 And if I should sin, thou watchest me; and thou hast not cleared me from iniquity.
Job 10:15 Or if I should be ungodly, woe is me: and if I should be righteous, I cannot lift myself up, for I am full of dishonour.
Job 10:16 For I am hunted like a lion for slaughter; for again thou hast changed and art terribly destroying me;
Job 10:17 renewing against me my torture: and thou hast dealt with me in great anger, and thou hast brought trials upon me.

Job 10:20 Is not the time of my life short? suffer me to rest a little,
Job 10:21 before I go whence I shall not return, to a land of darkness and gloominess;
Job 10:22 to a land of perpetual darkness, where there is no light, neither [can any one] see the life of mortals.


Job 11:5 But oh that the Lord would speak to thee, and open his lips to thee!
Job 11:6 Then shall he declare to thee the power of wisdom; for it shall be double of that which is with thee: and then shalt thou know, that a just recompence of thy sins has come to thee from the Lord.

Job 11:7 Wilt thou find out the traces of the Lord? or hast thou come to the end [of that] which the Almighty has made?
Job 11:8 Heaven [is] high; and what wilt thou do? and there are deeper things than those in hell; what dost thou know?
Job 11:9 Or longer than the measure of the earth, or the breadth of the sea.
Job 11:10 And if he should overthrow all things, who will say to him, What hast thou done?
Job 11:11 For he knows the works of transgressors; and when he sees wickedness, he will not overlook [it].

Job 11:12 But man vainly buoys himself up with words; and a mortal born of woman [is] like an ass in the desert.
Job 11:13 For if thou hast made thine heart pure, and liftest up [thine] hands towards him;
Job 11:14 if there is any iniquity in thy hands, put if far from thee, and let not unrighteousness lodge in thy habitation.
Job 11:15 For thus shall thy countenance shine again, as pure water; and thou shalt divest thyself of uncleanness, and shalt not fear.
Job 11:16 And thou shalt forget trouble, as a wave that has passed by; and thou shalt not be scared.
Job 11:17 And thy prayer [shall be] as the morning star, and life shall arise to thee [as] from the noonday.
Job 11:18 And thou shalt be confident, because thou hast hope; and peace shall dawn to thee from out of anxiety and care.
Job 11:19 For thou shalt be at ease, and there shall be no one to fight against thee; and many shall charge, and make supplication to thee.
Job 11:20 But safety shall fail them; for their hope is destruction, and the eyes of the ungodly shall waste away.


Job 12:9 Who then has not known in all these things, that the hand of the Lord has made them?
Job 12:10 Whereas the life of all living things is in his hand, and the breath of every man.
Job 12:11 For the ear tries words, and the palate tastes meats.
Job 12:12 In length of time is wisdom, and in long life knowledge.

Job 12:13 With him are wisdom and power, with him counsel and understanding.
Job 12:14 If he should cast down, who will build up? if he should shut up against man, who shall open?
Job 12:15 If he should withhold the water, he will dry the earth: and if he should let it loose, he overthrows and destroys it.
Job 12:16 With him are strength and power: he has knowledge and understanding.
Job 12:17 He leads counsellors away captive, and maddens the judges of the earth.
Job 12:18 He seats kings upon thrones, and girds their loins with a girdle.
Job 12:19 He sends away priests into captivity, and overthrows the mighty ones of the earth.
Job 12:20 He changes the lips of the trusty, and he knows the understanding of the elders.
Job 12:21 He pours dishonour upon princes, and heals the lowly.
Job 12:22 Revealing deep things out of darkness: and he has brought into light the shadow of death.
Job 12:23 Causing the nations to wander, and destroying them: overthrowing the nations, and leading them [away].
Job 12:24 Perplexing the minds of the princes of the earth: and he causes them to wander in a way, they have not known, [saying],
Job 12:25 Let them grope [in] darkness, and [let there be] no light, and let them wander as a drunken man.
