Signs of the times – “An object of scorn and ridicule”

International Holocaust Remembrance Day is held every year on January 27, chosen because on that day in 1945 the Nazis’ largest concentration and death camp, AuschwitzBirkenau, was liberated by the Red Army. This year, around that date, there were a number of articles in the press commenting on the ongoing problem of anti-Semitism today, most of which were depressingly familiar. In the UK, for example, an article in The Sunday Telegraph said:

“It’s especially sorrowful to see both how widespread anti-Semitism still is, and almost worse, how completely commonplace it has become among the very people who preach tolerance and inclusiveness most aggressively … [It] has simply become the respectable face of racism” (January 28).

Long ago, Moses was inspired to write,

“You will become a thing of horror and an object of scorn and ridicule to all the nations where the LORD will drive you” (Deuteronomy 28:37, NIV).

In many ways we see these words still being fulfilled today. We look for the time promised when attitudes will be very different and men

“shall take hold of the skirt of him that is a Jew, saying, We will go with you: for we have heard that God is with you” (Zechariah 8:23).
