“Showing the Gospel, teaching publicly and from house to house,

(November 07)

In the 3rd reading of today we listen to the apostle Paul who from the first day that he set foot in Asia, served the Lord Most High God and His sent one, in all humility of mind, and with many tears and temptations which befell him through the lying in wait of the Jews. He didn’t avoid telling the people in Asia anything that would help them. He was willing to tell everything he knew about God and His authorized one, the Nazarene Jeshua (Jesus Christ).
The converted opposer of the followers of Christ, when he had found the truth about the Messiah, was not afraid to tell about his new insights. He didn’t avoid teaching the people publicly and from house to house and warned Jews and Greeks to change the way they thought and acted. Everywhere he came he called people to change their way of life and to come to believe in and follow Christ, him being the way to God. (Acts 20:18-20; John 14:6).

Everywhere Paul came, he challenged people about the God or gods they honoured. For the Jewish God’s faithful believer it was very clear that there is only One True God and one person who could bring people closest to God, namely the sent one from God, Jeshua or Jesus Christ. Nobody had ever seen God but many had seen Jesus, who represented God. (Exodus 33:20; John 5:37) Paul wanted everybody to know that he came under Christ, like his fellow brethren. For those followers of Christ it was clear Jesus was their best mediator in front of God. (1 Corinthians 11:3; 1 Timothy 2:5)

Paul was convinced that sent one from God, who gave Himself a ransom for all, was given in the right time. (1 Timothy 2:6)

Today, living in a godless world, we should know there is even more reason to go around to tell about the saviour Jesus and his heavenly Father. When Jesus came it was a testimony that was given at the right time, but also for the times to come where the call would be even more stringent. For Paul it was clear people should come to know the Most High God, Jehovah and come to understand what His Plan is with this world. Even as the son of man Jeshua, the son of God, came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many, people should come to hear about his works and his act that brings salvation. Because it was that Nazarene who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us out of this present evil world, according to the will of or God and our Father (Matthew 20:28; Galatians 1:4).

In the 19th century Robert Roberts was well aware how Christianity had become contaminated by many philosophical and so called theological thoughts. He noticed how in the many churches (of different denominations) there were so many thoughts which did not come from the Holy Scriptures, but which were just human ideas or fantasies. On John Thomas his trip to the New World he also witnessed how many people left their home country because they did not like the domination of the church in their country, but also how they came to question what those churches taught.

J. Thomas and R. Roberts were convinced that each individual had to take on his or her responsibility. Though they also saw how many in this world wailed in the duties Christ Jesus asked from his followers. Some years after them John Roberts wrote in the Christadelphian Magazine

The reason that most of us fail is that we are too much part of the world and we cannot fulfil our responsibilities to the world if we are part of it. {John Roberts, The Christadelphian, 1980, page 93}

Jesus in his time already warned that the kingdom of God was at hand. Now coming closer to the end times we should repent ourselves but also try others to take that step of repentance (Mark 1:15). All people should come to see the signs of the Latter Days. Out of love for others we should help as many people as we can to come to see those signs and to make that important step to become a child of God. For that reason Jesus and his talmidim asked their followers to go from house to house, to preach the coming Kingdom of God.

From the moment the Holy Spirit had come to help the apostles, when they were hiding in a friends house, they went out inspired and able to talk in many languages. (Acts 1:8; Acts 2:1-4)
Travelling to many places the disciples of Jesus warned people to be ready before the sun shall be turned into darkness and the moon into blood. They wanted to see everybody prepared before the day of the Lord come, that great and notable day on which whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved. (Acts 2:20-21) Real Christians call on the Name of God and ask many things to god in the name of Christ. Not only for them, but asking God that His Kingdom may come and that God’s Will may be done on earth as in heaven. Real Christians wanting to do the Will of God, follow Jesus’ teaching and as Jesus asked to tell others about the Gospel, also go tell others about the Good News.

A healthy community of followers of Christ pulls others to come close to Christ Jesus and to unite with them, as brothers and sisters in Christ. In the years close to the resurrection of Christ Jesus the worship of God and brotherly love in the congregations in Jerusalem and Asia were therefore contagious and attracted people of different sorts and rank. But we may not forget that it is by the preaching work of the disciples that others could become convinced to join the movement of the Way. Today we may be far off from that Jewish movement of the first century, having more non-Jews in the religious group that now has become recognized as Christianity.

For centuries Christianity has been too quiet and let itself being pushed to the side by Christendom, where people get more attracted by all the human traditions and many heathen rites. Today lots of people do not see who Jesus really is and do not know the Name of God. In the darkness of these godless world real followers of Christ should dare to follow Paul and the other apostles. They were not afraid to go from house to house.

Today we see lesser preachers going form door to door than a few years ago, when we only could find in the majority Jehovah’s Witnesses and Mormons, plus a few Christadelphians and some eager zealous evangelicals, explaining what was going to come and how we should turn to Jehovah God.

In these modern times going from house to house or from door to door, is perhaps not the best way to evangelize. Perhaps we do have to think more about other ways to bring the Gospel to the rest of the world. However, the distribution of the Good News is very important and should be on everyone’s lips. We have not only to proclaim the name of Jesus the Christ but also the Gospel or Good News, and the name of the Only One God, Jehovah.

In any case the apostles did not think it was time to sit still. They were very aware of the task their master had given to them. Are we?

Let us to be active witnesses of Christ and of his gospel.

19 Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, (Matthew 28:19 CEB)
