Moldova 2020-2021 update

Bounded by Ukraine to the north, east, and south and by Romania to the west, Moldova lies to the east of the great arc of the Carpathian Mountains.

Until today there is still the problem of Transdniestria, also called Pridnestrovskaia Moldavskaia Republic and Pridnestrovie, separatist enclave in Moldova, located on the east bank of the Dniester River. Its main city along the Dniester River and the Odessa-Chişinău railway, Tiraspol has still a large Russian population and has been at the centre of a Russian separatist movement east of the Dneister.

The Russian speaking Moldovians can connect with our Russian speaking brothers in Russia, Lithuania and other countries.

About three-fourths of Moldova’s population consists of ethnic Moldovans, sometimes referred as Moldavians. There are smaller populations of Ukrainians, Russians, Gagauz, Roma (Gypsies), and Bulgarians.

Only one visit to Moldova was possible; in February 2020, before travel restrictions took effect. It was a successful Bible study weekend with six of our eight Moldovan sisters attending. The other two were working abroad.

Since then, the Moldovans continued to receive Isolation League materials and other material from ourselves. Some are in direct communication, but several do not possess the means to do this so much has to be done via the post.

Some also communicate with each other on a regular basis. One sister is able to ‘attend’ the weekly Breaking of Bread run for the Brothers and Sisters in Romania via Zoom.

A recent issue which has proved a challenge has been getting necessary welfare aid for winter fuel and medical supplies to a sister who lives in the internationally unrecognised region of Transdniestria. This was eventually achieved via the good offices of Western Union and the CBM Finance Brother.
