In most countries Mother’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday in May, among them the USA, Canada, most European countries, Australia, New Zealand, India, China, Japan, the Philippines and South Africa. One notable exception to this rule are the UK and Ireland, which celebrate Mother’s Day on the fourth Sunday in Lent and in several Roman Catholic regions August 15 (In Belgium several people use both Mother’s days, by which the 15th of August is a special day to come together with all children and grandchildren).
Most Arab countries celebrate Mother’s Day on March 21st (vernal equinox). Most East European countries celebrate Mother’s Day on March 8th. For a complete overview of the dates of Mother’s Day around the world see Mother’s Day on Wikipedia.
Mothers are truly special women. Regardless of their education, age, or financial status, mothers know exactly what needs to be done at all times. They are caring and patient, kind and compassionate, always willing to sacrifice their own time and energy for their children.
The verses in 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 come to mind when thinking of mothers:
“Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way, it is not irritable or resentful, it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.”
The Bible consistently asks followers to honour and love their mothers.
“Everyone of you shall revere his mother and father” (Leviticus 19:3)
“Let your father and mother be glad; let her who bore you rejoice.” (Proverbs 23:25)
