Today’s thought “What shall we answer God?” (December 30)

In yesterday’s chapter of Job we saw that even wild beasts are cut off from all care of man and cared for by God at their season of greatest need. Their instinct comes direct from God and guides them to help themselves during the time of the birth of their young; the very time when the herdsman is most anxious for his herd.

Though man often thinks he can control everything he is not able to do so and shall have to come to recognize that the Elohim is more mighty than him. That awesome God exists and we should come to see the things He made.

“ For the invisible things of him since the creation of the world are clearly seen, being perceived through the things that are made, even his everlasting power and divinity; that they may be without excuse:” (Ro 1:20 ASV)

Picture from: Can this be right, God? – Does God really know how to run the universe and my life?

Like yesterday, today in chapter 40 we do find God replying to the spirit which Job had so frequently manifested. God did not enter into a discussion with Job; he confined himself to stunning him by listing the proofs of divine omnipotence and all science. After a pause, during which Job does not think of answering, he resumes speaking. Will Job still contend with God?

Job 40:1 (39:31) And the Lord God answered Job, and said, Job 40:2 (39:32) Will [any one] pervert judgment with the Mighty One? and he that reproves God, let him return it for answer.

Job 40:3 (39:33) And Job answered and said to the Lord, Job 40:4 (39:34) Why do I yet plead? being rebuked even while reproving the Lord: hearing such things, whereas I am nothing: and what shall I answer to these [arguments]? I will lay my hand upon my mouth. Job 40:5 (39:35) I have spoken once; but I will not do so a second time.

Job 40:6 (40:1) And the Lord yet again answered and spoke to Job out of the cloud, [saying],

Job 40:7 (40:2) Nay, gird up now thy loins like a man; and I will ask thee, and do thou answer me. Job 40:8 (40:3) Do not set aside my judgment: and dost thou think that I have dealt with thee in any other way, than that thou mightest appear to be righteous?

In but a few words – by contrast to his many in previous chapters – Job acknowledges that he really has nothing he can say to the Elohim Hashem Jehovah, Divine Maker and Sustainer of everything, in defence of himself.

Job confesses that he spoke foolishly and asks the Adonai what he can answer to the One to Whom all might belongs. He agrees that indeed he is unworthy to reply to The Almighty, though has already said more than he should.

“4 Behold, I am of small account; What shall I answer thee? I lay my hand upon my mouth. 5 Once have I spoken, and I will not answer; Yea, twice, but I will proceed no further.” (Job 40:4-5 ASV)

When you would come before God, would you being able to stand up straight and answer His questions?
Would you, or are you, trying to prove that God is unjust and does the wrong things?
Are you willing to place yourself in the right?

“20 Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why didst thou make me thus? 21 Or hath not the potter a right over the clay, from the same lump to make one part a vessel unto honor, and another unto dishonor?” (Ro 9:20-21 ASV)

Today we do find many people who love to say that God is an unjust and horrible god. Problem is that many also hear Trinitarians telling them that thy shall burn for ever in hell. Such a picture of a father who would torture his children for ever, can only give a very strange picture of that God. But the Real and Only One True God, Who is One, is a loving God and does not torture His children.

That unseen Being is much stronger than any human being. No human being is able to stand up in his honour and pride, having been always upright and just to others.
No man can say he won the victory himself. (Job 40:7-14) After all, victory depends on God.

How long shall it take for mankind to come to see and recognize the Most High Set Apart or Holy God, Creator and Father, Lord of all and as such Lord of lords.
The depths of His Being might be beyond comprehension, because man is very limited in his knowledge or wisdom and in his power. God His Power, on the other hand, is unlimited, like there is also no limit to His knowledge.

Let us not forget that God’s strength and power is unmatched and that His authority is absolute:

“ «For the Chief Musician; set to the Gittith. A Psalm of David.» O Jehovah, our Lord, How excellent is thy name in all the earth, Who hast set thy glory upon the heavens!” (Ps 8:1 ASV)

“ Be thou exalted, O God, above the heavens; Let thy glory be above all the earth.” (Ps 57:5 ASV)

“ Jehovah is high above all nations, And his glory above the heavens.” (Ps 113:4 ASV)

“ Let them praise the name of Jehovah; For his name alone is exalted; His glory is above the earth and the heavens.” (Ps 148:13 ASV)

“ Ye turn things upside down! Shall the potter be esteemed as clay; that the thing made should say of him that made it, He made me not; or the thing formed say of him that formed it, He hath no understanding?” (Isa 29:16 ASV)

“ Woe unto him that striveth with his Maker! a potsherd among the potsherds of the earth! Shall the clay say to him that fashioneth it, What makest thou? or thy work, He hath no hands?” (Isa 45:9 ASV)

“ But now, O Jehovah, thou art our Father; we are the clay, and thou our potter; and we all are the work of thy hand.” (Isa 64:8 ASV)

“ O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? saith Jehovah. Behold, as the clay in the potter’s hand, so are ye in my hand, O house of Israel.” (Jer 18:6 ASV)
