23 And Jesus went about in all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of disease and all manner of sickness among the people. (Matthew 4:23 ASV)
Speaking to the Heart
(By Brother Dennis Gillett)
According to Matthew this was the Gospel of the kingdom of God which the Messiah preached amid the streets and hills of Galilee, in the synagogues of Judaea and in the metropolitan life of Jerusalem. He preached the Gospel of the kingdom of God (Matthew 4:23). In the Gospel of Matthew, the anointed King is revealed as the Son of David eventually to sit on David’s throne, and rule over the house of Jacob.
James and John wanted to sit with Christ on his throne in positions of authority. The dying thief asked for remembrance when the Christ came in his kingdom.
Some will see Abraham, Isaac and Jacob sitting down in that kingdom and they themselves cast out.
Jesus will not drink of the fruit of the vine until he drinks it new with his disciples in the kingdom. When his disciples ask him about the restoration of the kingdom to Israel, he does not rebuke them for their foolishness but says they must leave God to work out His own calendar. For forty days after his resurrection he spoke to them of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God. It was after that long session about the kingdom that they asked:
“Wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?”
In Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus is called “King of the Jews”; in Revelation 1, the “King of the earth”; in John 12, the “King of Israel”; in Hebrews 8, the “King of Salem”; in Revelation 17 and 19, the “King of kings”.
One day he will sit upon the throne of his glory and say to some,
“Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world” (Matthew 25:34).
