Signs of the times – “The US, Israel and the Golan Heights”

Washington’s support for Israel – both in word and deed – was again on display last month when President Trump announced that he was officially recognising the Golan Heights as part of the State of Israel. The Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, was present when the proclamation was signed on March 25 and described the US decision as “historic”, adding that it came “at a time when Golan is more important than ever for our security” – a reference to the threat posed by Iranian forces operating in Syria.
 
The Golan Heights were seized from Syria during the Six-Day War of 1967 and have been held by Israel since that time. Following the Yom Kippur War, Israel and Syria agreed to the formation of a forty-four mile (71 km) long demilitarised zone overseen by a UN observer force. Then in 1981 Israel passed a law which effectively annexed the territory, but this has never been internationally recognised.
 
President Trump’s proclamation was no doubt heartening to many Israelis, but it was also remarkable because this territory is included in the land that God promised to Abraham and his seed – thus we see another step forward in the developing purpose of God.
