Will There Ever be Peace on Earth?

We live in an uncertain world. We can never be sure what will happen tomorrow – to us, or to the world.
In this world of uncertainty, one thing seems sure. It is that people will continue to fight each other.

All history seems to point to the conclusion that war is inevitable. Yet there is good reason to believe that lasting peace
on earth will happen.
We are confident that lasting peace is a certainty because this good news is proclaimed so clearly in God’s message, the Bible.
Here is one piece of evidence:

“But in the last days it shall come to pass, that the mountain of the house of the LORD shall be established in the top of the mountains, and it shall be exalted above the hills; and people shall flow unto it.”

“And many nations shall come, and say, Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, and to the house of the God of Jacob;”

“And he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for the law shall go forth of Zion, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem”

“And he shall judge among many people, and rebuke strong nations afar off; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up a sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.”

“But they shall sit every man under his vine and under his fig tree; and none shall make them afraid: for the mouth of the LORD of hosts hath spoken it” (Micah 4:1-4).

Here is further evidence:

“In his days shall the righteous flourish; and abundance of peace so long as the moon endures. He shall have dominion also from sea to sea, and from the river unto the ends of the earth” (Psalm 72: 7,8).

In whose days does Psalm 72 promise there will be “abundance of peace”?
The whole Psalm describes the reign of a great king, the one concerning whom this was announced:

“He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David” (Luke 1:32).

In a famous passage in Isaiah 9, foretelling the birth of the Lord Jesus, he is called “The Prince of Peace”.

6 For a child has been born to us,+

A son has been given to us;

And the rulership* will rest on his shoulder.+

His name will be called Wonderful Counselor,+ Mighty God,+ Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. (Isaiah 9:6 NWT)

Jesus will do for men what men cannot do for themselves. He will establish peace on the earth.
Inevitably, this leads us to the New Testament teaching of the second coming of Jesus Christ. The very first message given
to the disciples after Jesus’ ascension was that he should come again:

“This same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven” (Acts 1:11).

Next time, the Lord Jesus will come, as he said he would,

“with power and great glory” (Luke 21:27).

All kingdoms of men will be removed (Revelation 11:15); the appointed King will rule in righteousness (Isaiah 32:1); peace and prosperity will prevail (Isaiah 11:1-9).
