Signs of the times – “Ukraine under pressure”

5000 Russian rubles issued in 2006

Following the annexation of Crimea in 2014 and military intervention in Ukraine, the US, the EU and other countries imposed harsh sanctions against Russia in an attempt to isolate her. Mr Putin’s government responded by imposing its own against the West. The rouble went into freefall – a combination of sanctions and cheaper oil. In April this year the US increased the economic pressure by imposing further sanctions in response to the Russian state’s alleged “worldwide malign activity”.

Despite this, Moscow is continuing to assert itself in many ways. Recently, a news report has highlighted continuing Russian harassment of her neighbour, Ukraine. In May this year a 12-mile (19 km) bridge was officially opened across the Kerch Strait, connecting the Crimean Peninsula with the Russian mainland. The bridge became a priority after 2014 as Russia has no land border with the peninsula. Ukraine has complained that

“Russia is using its new bridge to Crimea … to delay its neighbour’s ships, exert political pressure and hurt its economy … Waiting times can be as long as three days”,

according to a Ukrainian spokesman (Bloomberg, July 27). Russia’s increasing dominance in the region, despite Western sanctions, is surely in line with prophetic expectations.
