Today’s thought “Being made prosperous and numerous on conditions” (May 13)

In today’s reading we read that Jehovah keeps His promise and brings His chosen ones into the hind which their fathers possessed.

“5 and Jehovah thy God will bring thee into the land which thy fathers possessed, and thou shalt possess it; and he will do thee good, and multiply thee above thy fathers. 6 And Jehovah thy God will circumcise thy heart, and the heart of thy seed, to love Jehovah thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, that thou mayest live.” (De 30:5-6 ASV)

Evidently the assembled Israelites will move from the north and the south to converge at the place where Joshua led the people over Jordan into the land; and from there they will see

“the valley of Achor (trouble) as the door of hope”

From the previous chapters we know that Moses tried to have those around him to recognise their Helper as the Most High God and Establisher. He guided them through the desert and gave them daily bread (the manna from heaven). God provided them also with His Word and His commandments. Moses therefore hoped they would listen to God’s Words and follow His “10 Sayings“.

Now those people could find themselves in the possibility to enter a land God had provided for them.  Even when they would be separated into their various tribes, they would occupy the land as apportioned in Ezekiel 48.

Isaiah predicts that the previous borders will be too limited to accommodate the great increase then seen.

“ The children of thy bereavement shall yet say in thine ears, The place is too strait for me; give place to me that I may dwell.” (Isa 49:20 ASV)

They will be greatly extended beyond the confines of Palestine, to include the territory promised to Abraham: an extent of land never as yet possessed by Israel:

“ The vision of Obadiah. Thus saith the Lord Jehovah concerning Edom: We have heard tidings from Jehovah, and an ambassador is sent among the nations, saying, Arise ye, and let us rise up against her in battle.” (Ob 1:1 ASV)

“17  But in mount Zion there shall be those that escape, and it shall be holy; and the house of Jacob shall possess their possessions. 18 And the house of Jacob shall be a fire, and the house of Joseph a flame, and the house of Esau for stubble, and they shall burn among them, and devour them; and there shall not be any remaining to the house of Esau; for Jehovah hath spoken it. 19 And they of the South shall possess the mount of Esau, and they of the lowland the Philistines; and they shall possess the field of Ephraim, and the field of Samaria; and Benjamin shall possess Gilead. 20 And the captives of this {1 } host of the children of Israel, {2 } that are among the Canaanites, shall possess even unto Zarephath; and the captives of Jerusalem, that are in Sepharad, shall possess the cities of the South. {1) Or fortress 2) Or, shall possess that which belongeth to the Canaanites, even etc; Or that are among the Canaanites, even unto Zarephath, and etc }21 And saviours shall come up on mount Zion to judge the mount of Esau; and the kingdom shall be Jehovah’s.” (Ob 1:17-21 ASV)

In many denominations they teach people not to have to live up to the commandments. Be not fooled. Do know that the rules God has given are not to difficult to keep. That what God demands from us is not out of your reach. The Words of God in extremis do not to be explained before you can live it. Like the people in Moses and Joshua’s time got it, it is still here for us today. The Word is right here and now—as near as the tongue in your mouth, as near as the heart in your chest. God requires from us just to do it!

“11 For this commandment which I command thee this day, it is not too {1 } hard for thee, neither is it far off. {1) Or wonderful }12 It is not in heaven, that thou shouldest say, Who shall go up for us to heaven, and bring it unto us, and make us to hear it, that we may do it? 13 Neither is it beyond the sea, that thou shouldest say, Who shall go over the sea for us, and bring it unto us, and make us to hear it, that we may do it? 14 But the word is very nigh unto thee, in thy mouth, and in thy heart, that thou mayest do it.

Those who say we do not have to follow God’s rules, forget that to be a Christian we have to follow Christ and like him should love the God of Abraham, Who is the only One True God we should worship.

Those false teachers who preach we do not have to live according the rules of God, forget all the parables of Christ which clearly show how people can loose the entrance of the Kingdom of God when they do not what is required from them.

Look at what God has done for you today and at what He has done in the past: Him having placed in front, of each of us also, Life and Good Death and Evil. And the Almighty commanded then as He does today

to Love GOD, your God.

As He requested His people in the Old Days to walk in His ways and to keep His commandments, regulations, and rules so that they would live, really live, live exuberantly, blessed by the Elohim their God, in the land they could enter and possess, we too to enter the Promised Land or the Kingdom of God should live according God His Will. We should know that as God warned His people that is still a warning for us today. If you have a change of heart, refuse to listen obediently, and wilfully go off to serve and worship other gods, you shall have no possibility to enter the Kingdom of God, because you, like non-believers, will most certainly die. You won’t last long in the lands that you are crossing to find life. When Jesus shall return to judge the living and the dead he shall see how we lived up to be a real Christian. He shall, like his heavenly Father, place before you Life and Death, Blessing and Curse. Be aware, and let you not be mislead. Choose life so that you and your children will live.

15  See, I have set before thee this day life and good, and death and evil; 16 in that I command thee this day to love Jehovah thy God, to walk in his ways, and to keep his commandments and his statutes and his ordinances, that thou mayest live and multiply, and that Jehovah thy God may bless thee in the land whither thou goest in to possess it.

17 But if thy heart turn away, and thou wilt not hear, but shalt be drawn away, and worship other gods, and serve them; 18 I denounce unto you this day, that ye shall surely perish; ye shall not prolong your days in the land, whither thou passest over the Jordan to go in to possess it. 19 I call heaven and earth to witness against you this day, that I have set before thee life and death, the blessing and the curse: therefore choose life, that thou mayest live, thou and thy seed;” (De 30:11-19 ASV)

As Moses previously had asked

Who is on God’s side

the same question can still be raised today.

God has given so many gifts to mankind that it is to each individual to recognise those gifts and to show thankfulness. We can be part of that great nation God has promised Abraham. By the death of Christ are the goyim free to accept Jesus (also a work to be done) and to become blessed by him.

Let us not forget that our obedience to God His Word both reflects our love for God and affects our relationship with Him – as does our disobedience. Moses put it starkly:

“Today I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Choose life so you and your descendants may live.”
