Memorizing wonderfully 3 Practical Tips for Memorizing Scripture

We should know that by memorizing Scripture verses we can show to others and to God how we love the Word of God. It is a way of expressing ourselves with our faith and giving ourselves an opportunity to grow in our faith.

Dallas Willard, professor of Philosophy at the University of Southern California, wrote,

“Bible memorization is absolutely fundamental to spiritual formation. If I had to choose between all the disciplines of the spiritual life, I would choose Bible memorization, because it is a fundamental way of filling our minds with what it needs. ” (“Spiritual Formation in Christ for the Whole Life and Whole Person” in Vocatio, Vol. 12, no. 2, Spring, 2001, p. 7).

Chuck Swindoll wrote,

Bible and Scroll for the Study of Word of God
Boekrol en Bijbel voor Studie van het Woord van God

“I know of no other single practice in the Christian life more rewarding, practically speaking, than memorizing Scripture. . . . No other single exercise pays greater spiritual dividends! Your prayer life will be strengthened. Your witnessing will be sharper and much more effective. Your attitudes and outlook will begin to change. Your mind will become alert and observant. Your confidence and assurance will be enhanced. Your faith will be solidified” (Growing Strong in the Seasons of Life [Grand Rapids: Zondervan, 1994], p. 61).

Storing texts in our minds about God helps us relate to Him as He really is. For this we can first underline some sayings of God, in a colour especially attributed to His sayings. Then we can try to repeat some of His sayings and think about them. Repeating them a few times in our head, giving it time to enter our heart.

The Word of God is powerful because it is literally “God-breathed” from the mind of the Holy Spirit (2 Timothy 3:16-17). When repeating it in our head we shall allow it to fill our minds with His words and avail ourselves of the most powerful spiritual tool there is.

Memorizing Scripture is the privilege and responsibility of every Christian. There are several excellent Scripture memory systems available, including the Navigators Topical Memory System.

Members from our ecclesia a few years ago received little memory cards, with on top the subject. Categorised like that it is a good way to recall them when tackling a subject or a certain point of discussion. To our regret we have no cards over any more; and have no pdf or other electronic file or mould to reprint them again.
The verses we are going to present to memorize are well available on an electronic Word-file.

Even without a specific published method, anyone can start with the key verses of the Christian faith — such as John 3:16 and Ephesians 2:8-9 — and continue to build verse upon verse. The key is to continually review the ones already memorized before adding any new ones. Whatever method is chosen, the benefits of Bible memorization are victory over sin, strengthened faith, and joy in the Christian life.

10 Practical Tips for Memorizing Scripture:

1. Memorize the Word of God in community.

With a small group or with the larger congregation, memorizing Scripture as a community is a powerful way to learn the Bible together through pursuing mutual goals with accountability. It does not matter if you are with many or just a few. Every time you come together you can help each other by now and then quoting a Bible verse.

You should not be afraid to push each other to memorize the Word of God more. Sharpening one another is one way to live out Proverbs 27:17:

Proverbs 27:17 The Scriptures 1998+ (17) Iron is sharpened by iron, And a man sharpens the face of his friend.

2. Memorize along with your family.

Memorising is not always easy. Some also think it is just only for kids.

The Christian, blogger, and coffee aficionado Kevin Halloran says

Memory verses are not just for kids! If your children participate in programs like AWANA and memorize Bible verses, invite the whole family to memorize together. This is a great way to teach the whole family the truth of the Bible.

3. Use note cards.

Several methods may be used in bible class to have us remember what not to forget or to take in mind.bible markers are a very handy useful tool.

When you encounter a Bible verse you want to put to memory, mark it and make verse cards and place them in noticeable areas of your house or workplace: on the bathroom mirror, in your living room, or on your refrigerator. Some people even memorize Scripture in the shower! Every place is a good place to take the Word of God at heart.

Deuteronomy 6:6-9 The Scriptures 1998+ (6) “And these Words which I am commanding you today shall be in your heart, (7) and you shall impress them upon your children, and shall speak of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise up, (8) and shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. (9) “And you shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

Many may think this counts only for Jews. But like Jesus took this serious we too should take it as something not to forget. You even may wonder why we should not bind God’s commands on our hands, on the doorposts of our houses, and on our gates so that they are constantly reminding us of God and his commands.

When we post verses all around our house, we are able to more frequently meditate on God’s word, which helps us renew our minds.

4. Listen to an audio Bible.

In these times we are not able to go to the ecclesia every day and to have long Bible studies in group. It is already great when we manage to follow the Christadelphian reading plan and succeed to go through the three readings each day and take time to think about them.

From our daily Bible readings we can select some verses to write them down and to take sometime during the day to meditate on them.

When not having time in the morning to go through the daily Bible readings you might use some bible recordings to listen at when on your way to work.

A good way to redeem the time is to listen to Scripture while in the car, at the gym, or cooking. This is an ideal method for memorizing longer passages of Scripture and to set your mind on things above.

Colossians 3:2 The Scriptures 1998+ (2) Mind the matters above, not those on the earth.

A good sermon can ingrain the truths of Scripture in your head as well. By downloading the Unlocking the Bible podcast, mobile app or by listening to the Daily Broadcast, you are taught God’s Word in an encouraging and refreshing way.
Faith in Christ does come by hearing, right?

5. Pray for God to help you.

Much too often is forgotten that there is a very powerful tool each person can use as much as he wants.

When we do know that it is the Elohim Hashem Jehovah God Who is the One Who commands that we should know Scripture and let it dwell in us, we should be aware that in case we are showing our will to get to know His Word, that He shall help us to know it.

You never should be afraid to ask God for helping you. You may count on it that all those who eagerly seek God shall find Him. Also those who are willing to get to know His Word He shall give His word.

Do not hesitate to ask God for helping you to remember His sacred Words.

Pray to God for help, pray to God for guidance, pray to God for understanding, pray to God for a deeper love for his Word.

Remember how even people of God where not afraid to call unto Him to help them.

Psalms 119:2 The Scriptures 1998+ (2) Blessed are those who observe His witnesses, Who seek Him with all the heart!

Psalms 119:4-6 The Scriptures 1998+ (4) You have commanded us To guard Your orders diligently. (5) Oh, that my ways were established To guard Your laws! (6) Then I would not be ashamed, When I look into all Your commands.

Psalms 119:18 The Scriptures 1998+ (18) Open my eyes, that I might see Wonders from Your Torah.

Psalms 119:19 The Scriptures 1998+ (19) I am a sojourner in the earth; Do not hide Your commands from me.

Psalms 119:27 The Scriptures 1998+ (27) Make me understand the way of Your orders; That I might meditate on Your wonders.

Psalms 119:33-36 The Scriptures 1998+ (33) Teach me, O יהוה {Jehovah}, the way of Your laws, And I observe it to the end. (34) Make me understand, that I might observe Your Torah, And guard it with all my heart. (35) Make me walk in the path of Your commands, For I have delighted in it. (36) Incline my heart to Your witnesses, And not to own gain.

Be not afraid to pray for illumination and help. God will answer!

6. Study a passage of Scripture deeply.

As Christadelphians we can take good use of the Daily Reading Plan. If you have it not yet, you may find this plan available as a 2-page PDF document or you can obtain this reading plan on three laminated bookmarks at the Christadelphian Bible Study Aides page.

A good way to come to do your daily Bible readings is by gong online. visiting dailyreadings.org.

When going through those daily readings those verses that attract your attention, you could use to memorize that day.

It is also not bad just to take one particular chapter to meditate on for the whole week. When pouring yourself over one portion of Scripture for days and weeks at a time, it can be much easier to memorize a passage fairly easily. Reading the same set of verses over and over again will not only draw out riches from God’s Word, but it will engrave those verses on your heart through repetition and deep meditation.

Suggested passages to start studying are Romans 8; Psalm 1; Ephesians 2:1-10; Ephesians 6:10-20; John 3.

7. Find resources to help.

Scripture memory? There’s a mobile app for that!
There are many websites and programs that can help you memorize Scriptures by providing plans and tools for your aid.

Popular ones include MemVerseRememberMe, Fighter Verses, and MobilizeFaith.

8. Put Scripture to song.

Chances are you know the ABC’s because of the alphabet song, or you know the major music scale (Do-Re-Mi…) because of The Sound of Music. Getting a song stuck in your head is proof that music is a powerful tool to help memorization. That is why putting the Bible to song or listening to music filled with biblical lyrics is a useful way to internalize the Word of God.

9. Always be on the lookout.

During your normal study of Scripture, or while you are listening to a sermon, be on the lookout for good verses to memorize. Having fresh scriptures to meditate on will deepen your understanding of God and knowledge of his Word.

Every day we can be taken by an other saying than the previous time we read the chapter of the day. every day we also have other circumstances and as such it is also not bad to take the concordance and look for the word what is on your mind. Then you can find many verses around that word and pick some out to try to remember.

When asking counsel from the Most High you may count on Him to bring some verses to you. consider to meditate on those verses.

You also can just open the Bible somewhere, read those pages and take some verses out of that text to write out and to think about throughout the day, and to memorize it.

10. Read Scripture out loud or write it down.

Reading out loud is a common tip for how to best memorize. Lots of teachers advice their pupils to read the lesson they have to learn out loud.

It is one of the best memorization methods because it combines two learning styles: visual and auditory.

You also can read them as if you are wanting an other person to come to understand them. Like you are teaching some one else that verse.

Writing out the scriptures is another way to memorize because it targets two learning styles as well: visual and tactile.

Other Scripture Memorization Tips:

  • Before you set to memorize a verse, read the passage the verse is from to make sure you know what it means in context.
  • Don’t forget to memorize the reference! This helps in your own personal study and for sharing with others.
  • Think about how you can apply the verse to your life, and then pray for God’s help in applying it.
  • Use it or lose it!
If you don’t keep Scripture fresh in your mind, it may be easy to lose!
Plan to review what you memorize from time to time to keep God’s Word fresh.

To remember

Though the Grace of salvation may be given to all, salvation depends upon the assimilation of the mind to the divine ideas, principles, and affections, exhibited in the Bestseller of all times and Book of books, the Bible. To come to the True Faith one has to open the mind to the Word of God and to allow oneself time to assimilate all those words.

To give ourself an opportunity to remember those words of the bible we should have trust in that book of books. When believing in it it can inspire us we shall be able to have it feed us.

Always should we be aware that it shall not take a few hours, days or months to come to know the Bible. It shall take a lifetime for its scope, and untiring diligence for its accomplishment.

To remember lots of verses we shall have to show patience , understanding that  such memorization is a work of slow development, and can only be achieved by the industrious application of the individual to the expression of God’s mind in the Scriptures of truth. therefore it is best to take up the Scriptures every day and to take some verses from it to pounder on (every day).

Going through the Bible from year to year, the reader will reap much profit, gradually losing the insipidity of the natural mind, and taking on the warm and exalted tone of the Spirit’s teaching, which qualifies for the inheritance of the Saints in light.when having enough patience and trust in God’s Guidance, He shall take care you shall come to remember the right verses at the right moment, so that you shall be a worthy witness in His name.
