The flood, floods and mythic flood stories 11 Overwhelming waters

A prediction of a flood which will be the end can be found in Daniel 9:26.

“And after the threescore and two weeks shall the anointed one be cut off, and {1} shall have nothing: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and even unto the end shall be war; desolations are determined. {1) Or [there shall be none belonging to him]}” (Daniel 9:26 ASV)

Probably we have to consider it to be a flood of terrible things happening to mankind. Even the one who is Daniel pointing to shall have to suffer and shed his blood, as a flood of “new life giving blood”.

“{1} By oppression and judgment he was taken away; and as for his generation, who [among them] considered that he was cut off out of the land of the {2} living for the transgression of my people to whom the stroke [was due]? {1) Or [From] 2) Or [living? for the transgression of my people was he stricken]}” (Isaiah 53:8 ASV)

“And he said unto them, Elijah indeed cometh first, and restoreth all things: and how is it written of the Son of man, that he should suffer many things and be set at nought?” (Mark 9:12 ASV)

“Behooved it not the Christ to suffer these things, and to enter into his glory?” (Luke 24:26 ASV)

For sure the time Daniel is speaking of and the flood he is talking about shall not be a general flood or deluge which would destroy the whole world, because God Noah and his family, which is also for the whole world to know, that He never would bring such disastrous flood any more. Never in history would they come to see such an other water flood covering the whole world. Noah his generation is the only one who has experienced that all the springs of the vast watery deep were broken open and the floodgates of the heavens were opened, giving a downpour upon the earth that went on for months, covering the whole surface, killing so many living beings.

“11  In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened. 12 And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.” (Genesis 7:11-12 ASV)

“17  And the flood was forty days upon the earth; and the waters increased, and bare up the ark, and it was lifted up above the earth. 18 And the waters prevailed, and increased greatly upon the earth; and the ark went upon the face of the waters. 19 And the waters prevailed exceedingly upon the earth; and all the high mountains that were under the whole heaven were covered. 20 Fifteen cubits upward did the waters prevail; and the mountains were covered.

21 And all flesh died that moved upon the earth, both birds, and cattle, and beasts, and every {1} creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth, and every man: {1) Or [swarming thing that swarmeth]} 22 all in whose nostrils was the breath of the spirit of life, of all that was on the dry land, died. 23 {1} And every living thing was {2} destroyed that was upon the face of the ground, both man, and cattle, and creeping things, and birds of the heavens; and they were destroyed from the earth: and Noah only was left, and they that were with him in the ark. {1) Or [and he destroyed every living thing] 2) Heb [blotted out]} 24 And the waters prevailed upon the earth a hundred and fifty days.” (Genesis 7:17-24 ASV)

The fear for water may still be in us, because that is part of life. We should fear it, but we even should fear God more.  But we may trust the Divine Creator Who established His covenant to Noah that no more will all flesh be cut off by waters of a deluge, and no more will there occur a deluge to bring the earth to ruin.

“8  And God spake unto Noah, and to his sons with him, saying, 9 And I, behold, I establish my covenant with you, and with your seed after you; 10 and with every living creature that is with you, the birds, the cattle, and every beast of the earth with you; of all that go out of the ark, even every beast of the earth. 11 And I will establish my covenant with you; neither shall all flesh be cut off any more by the waters of the flood; neither shall there any more be a flood to destroy the earth.” (Genesis 9:8-11 ASV)

though God gave a sign for us to remember those day He was angry, because man had left Him and was not afraid to show the badness to others. Badness being so abundant that by most people the inclination of their heat was mostly bad at all times.

“5 And the waters decreased continually until the tenth month: in the tenth month, on the first day of the month, were the tops of the mountains seen.

6 And it came to pass at the end of forty days, that Noah opened the window of the ark which he had made: 7 and he sent forth a raven, and it went forth to and fro, until the waters were dried up from off the earth.” (Genesis 8:5-7 ASV)

Too many peoples have in their culture the story of such an enormous catastrophe which destroyed the whole world. This is not a coincidence, we can find such stories all over the world because the ancestors of those people telling those stories knew how terrible it was and how real and how their people had to be warned to be careful not to tempt the gods any more like the previous people had done.

It was not only a wave as tall as a 30-story building which would have crashed over the banks of the Yellow River, demolishing everything in its path, soaking the streets of ancient China’s nascent cities and washing away the surrounding farmland. Geological evidence for a catastrophic flood or floods may be found all over the world. Geologists have found evidence of a massive flood by the sediments of layers in the earth but also by the signs of population retreating higher and higher, to escape the rising water.

We should remember those days and take care that we and the people around us shall not offend God in such a way as in the time of Noah.

Let us therefore listen to the story as written down in the scriptures.
