And what is God like?

Here are some more Bible verses that describe him:

The LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth. Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children’s children, unto the third and to the fourth generation.                                                                                                Exodus 34:6&7

Your mercy, O LORD, is in the heavens;

Your faithfulness reaches to the clouds,

Your righteousness is like the great mountains;

Your judgements are a great deep.                                                           Psalm 36:5&6

 

The word became flesh among us, and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth… For the Law was given through Moses, but grace and truth through Jesus Christ. No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten son, who is in the bosom of the Father, he has declared him.                                                                                                                                John 1:14-18

That’s all very fine, but it takes time to read the Bible – it’s such a big book – and to be honest some of it looks, well, stodgy really.

Um, the trouble is that fast food often appears more attractive than something that takes time to prepare and our staple diet might seem unpalatable. But we do not have to start off with the ‘real meat’; something easier to digest will do just fine:

As newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby, if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious.                                                              1Peter2: 2&3

So the process of developing a character as God would have us is a gradual one. It is often an exciting and fulfilling one too, despite setbacks and difficulties, as we shall see.
