Why we do not keep to a Sabbath or a Sunday or Lord’s Day #1 Before rain of food from heaven

Many times people ask us why we have our services also in the middle of the week and how it can be that are members can work on a Sabbath, a Saturday or a Sunday.

Every day a day of and for God

For us every day is a day of God and should also be a day for God. Any day of the week can be used to worship God. But also any day of the week can be used to do some work or to take some rest.

Some people are convinced and say to us we should rest on the seventh day of the week and should keep that day holy for the Lord. Naturally we can ask first which Lord they than do mean. The Bible speaks about God Who took some rest after six days of creation. Therefore people take it the seventh day also to be a day of rest for man, like it is for God. But what is exactly that seventh day. Jews would say the šabbāt/Shabbath/Shabbat or Sabbath, which is not exactly the same as the Saturday, because it is from Friday sunset until Saturday sunset. Christians say it is Sunday, but they forget that is the 8th day or the 1st day of a new week.

Those demanded to work

The Jews found their idea for keeping Shabbat or Sabbath in their many writings like the Torah, Nebim or Nevi’im, Kethubim or Ketuvim (writings) (Kethubim Aleph or 1st writings), Mishnah, Tosefta, and both Talmuds which are devoted chiefly to rules and regulations for the Sabbath.  The Jews also recognise there may be a Shabbat Goy, when according to strict Jewish law, a Jew is not allowed to employ a non-Jew to do work on the Sabbath which is forbidden to a Jew, there are many Jews who use a Non-Jew or Gentile in their household on the Sabbath-day to perform services which are religiously forbidden to Jews on that day.  The rule of the Rabbis is “amirah le-goy shebut” (i.e., “to bid a Gentile to perform work on the Sabbath is still a breach of the Sabbath law,” though not so flagrant as performing the work oneself); but under certain circumstances the Rabbis allowed the employment of non-Jews, especially to heat the oven on winter days in northern countries.

Because we do all have to look seriously at the problem of working and rest and having it to be for all on the same day or having to be on a different day for each. Because a serious problem presents itself to the real lover of God who should love his neighbours and can not ask something to do from them which would not be in accordance to God’s Laws. As such those who say no work may be done on the 7th day and everybody should keep their Sabbath, they should not use some service where others would have to deliver work on that day. This naturally would make no nurses, doctors, paid priests, pastors or any clergy available on that day because it would be having them doing their job or work.

Days before the Sabbath rule

The Sabbath Law was not always there for man. We may notice that by the creation, we are told, that it was God who took some rest on the seventh day. Nothing is told about man resting on that day.

Some 30 times we do find the expression Day of Jehovah in the Scriptures, and this particular day is also referred to by means of the equivalent phrases, about 300 times.

The seventh day of the week was blessed and set apart by the Elohim at creation.

Genesis 2:2-3 The Scriptures 1998+  (2)  And on the seventh day Elohim completed His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had made.  (3)  And Elohim blessed the seventh day and set it apart, because on it He rested from all His work which Elohim in creating had made.

The days before the fall of man nowhere we do find a description of a day of rest. The opposite we may find that before the fall nothing was considered to be labour for man. The same at the time of the restored Kingdom of God we may expect not having any feel of labour or pain any more. Only when they Adam and Eve had gone against the Will of God and had eaten from the Tree of knowledge of good and evil, they got expelled from the Garden and had to face labour of all sorts.

Their rebellion brought not yet other rules than the ones they had to keep before. Even at the time the earth was not longer a paradise and when God saw it had become so terrible He had to do something against it, we still do not hear of people who had to keep Sabbath.

Genesis 6:1-3 The Scriptures 1998+  (1)  And it came to be, when men began to increase on the face of the earth, and daughters were born to them,  (2)  that the sons of Elohim saw the daughters of men, that they were good. And they took wives for themselves of all whom they chose.  (3)  And יהוה {Jehovah} said, “My Spirit shall not strive with man forever in his going astray. He is flesh, and his days shall be one hundred and twenty years.”

Genesis 6:5-7 The Scriptures 1998+  (5)  And יהוה {Jehovah} saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.  (6)  And יהוה {Jehovah} was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart.  (7)  And יהוה {Jehovah} said, “I am going to wipe off man whom I have created from the face of the earth, both man and beast, creeping creature and birds of the heavens, for I am sorry that I have made them.”

But Noaḥ found favour in the eyes of יהוה {Jehovah} (Genesis 6:8) and was ordered to bring man again on the right path. But the people did not want to listen to him. So God decided to clean up the earth of the ungodly people. He brought an enormous flood over the earth to wipe all the badness out of the world.

The days after the flood it still took centuries before the Sabbath rule was given to man. It was long after god had promised a great nation to Abraham, once more man questioned God and asked Him why He had left them in such an horrible situation, though God had liberated them from slavery in Egypt. They asked for food and got daily bread from heaven.

Murmuring of people and raining food from heaven

Jehovah had chosen Moses to lead His people out of Egypt (Genesis 4) and they took their journey from Elim, and all the congregation of the children of Israel came unto the wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after their departing out of the land of Egypt. (Genesis 16) Again we could find the whole congregation of the children of Israel murmuring against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness (Exo 16:2-3)  And the children of Israel found they had it better when they could sit by the flesh pots, and when they did eat bread to the full, but now they found themselves in the dessert brought into a wilderness, to kill this whole assembly with hunger.

As we have seen before, God taking action after people complained about Him, He decided to have it  rain bread from heaven for them. The people had to go out and gather a certain rate every day.

Exodus 16:4-7 The Scriptures 1998+  (4)  And יהוה {Jehovah} said to Mosheh, “See, I am raining bread from the heavens for you. And the people shall go out and gather a day’s portion every day, in order to try them, whether they walk in My Torah or not.  (5)  “And it shall be on the sixth day that they shall prepare what they bring in, and it shall be twice as much as they gather daily.”  (6)  And Mosheh and Aharon said to all the children of Yisra’ĕl, “At evening you shall know that יהוה {Jehovah} has brought you out of the land of Mitsrayim.  (7)  “And in the morning you shall see the esteem of יהוה {Jehovah}, for He hears your grumblings against יהוה {Jehovah}. And what are we, that you grumble against us?”

Here we do find the first time God created a time indication and a demand for a certain day. On the 6th day they had to do extra work because they could not gather manna on the day God was resting. For the first time man was confronted by limitations for him because of God resting on the seventh day.

The people got six days in the evening flesh to eat, and in the morning bread to the full. But they had to remember this all came from Jehovah (Genesis 16:8,12)

Not following a request for not going out to gather manna

Now Jehovah let them know that after that sixth day there was a day of rest, a holy Sabbath unto Jehovah. That seventh day they would not be able to find any manna in the fields. God had asked them not to go out to look for it, but again He could see people not following His Words or request. Therefore Jehovah decided to give them set rules because they kept refusing God His commandments and His Laws. they had to learn and pay attention! For Jehovah had given them the manna and the seventh day to rest, so that they should not have to complain about any burdens, like they did before. The Sabbath therefore God had given them so that every man could remain in his place and be at ease.

Exodus 16:23-30 The Scriptures 1998+  (23)  And he said to them, “This is what יהוה {Jehovah} has said, ‘Tomorrow is a rest, a Sabbath set-apart to יהוה {Jehovah}. That which you bake, bake; and that which you cook, cook. And lay up for yourselves all that is left over, to keep it until morning.’ ”  (24)  And they laid it up till morning, as Mosheh commanded. And it did not stink, and no worm was in it.  (25)  And Mosheh said, “Eat it today, for today is a Sabbath to יהוה {Jehovah}, today you do not find it in the field.  (26)  “Gather it six days, but on the seventh day, which is the Sabbath, there is none.”  (27)  And it came to be that some of the people went out on the seventh day to gather, but they found none.  (28)  And יהוה {Jehovah} said to Mosheh, “How long shall you refuse to guard My commands and My Torot1? Footnote: 1Torot – plural of Torah, teaching.  (29)  “See, because יהוה {Jehovah} has given you the Sabbath, therefore He is giving you bread for two days on the sixth day. Let each one stay in his place, do not let anyone go out of his place on the seventh day.”  (30)  So the people rested on the seventh day1. Footnote: The seventh day of the week, the weekly Sabbath, was observed before the Ten Words were given on Mt. Sinai.
