Doing the works of God

We have seen that Jesus did not want to follow his own way but wanted always to do the Will of his heavenly Father. In case Jesus was or is God he would naturally always have done his own way and followed his own will. But Jesus was the sent one from God.

The apostles could find a master teacher, an heir who differed in a sense nothing from a servant, though he be lord of all. But he is under tutors and governors until the time appointed of the Father, who shall decide when he can return to the earth. Even Jesus did not know that because only God knows everything and Jesus has given himself in the hands of the Most High God, willing to do His Will and following His commandments and His Wishes.

We all were infants in the world, made children of God by Christ Jesus, though in bondage under the elements of the world. But when the fullness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, to redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons. This way goim or gentiles also got the opportunity to be like Jews coming into a restored relationship with the heavenly Father.

Gal 4:1-7 The Scriptures 1998+ (1) And I say, for as long as the heir is a child, he is no different from a slave, though he is master of all, (2) but is under guardians and trustees till the time prearranged by the father. (3) So we also, when we were children, were under the elementary matters of the world, being enslaved. (4) But when the completion of the time came, Elohim sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under Torah, (5) to redeem those who were under Torah, in order to receive the adoption as sons. (6) And because you are sons, Elohim has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying, “Abba, Father!” (7) So you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, also an heir of Elohim through Messiah.

Through the work of God His Son the world has found ways to come to the Most High God and find the bread of life. They only have to find the door to life, the true vine, which is Jeshua or Jesus Christ, the Messiah. But man shall have to make the right choices and have to decide either to continue following man’s teachings and human dogmas or to follow the Word of God and the teachings of his only begotten beloved son.

In John 6 today we have an elaborate account of the feeding of a multitude with loaves and fishes. The story is familiar to us, it is the one miracle of Jesus that is recorded in all 4 gospels. Afterwards they cross Galilee, it is evident that Jesus has a great number of followers (would be disciples!) at this stage; he chides them,

“Do not labour for the food that perishes but for the food that endures to eternal life” (verse 27).

Most do not get the point! Do we? Many are very interested in being able to do remarkable things,

“they said to him, ‘What must we do, to be doing the works of God?’” (verse 28).

They find the answer of Jesus unsatisfactory – do we? They do not get his point when he says,

“This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent” (verse 29).

Belief is proved by what that belief causes us to think and then do!

Jesus next develops the concept of spiritual bread in contrast to what they have recently taken part in. They only listen to him, we could say, with one ear; only picking up what they want to hear! It has become the same in a sense in these days, sort of reading with one eye!

Jesus proceeds to tell them,

“This is the will of my Father that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day” (verse 40).

How do we get our minds into true focus so that we ‘look on’ Jesus in a way pleasing to the Father?

The next verse tells us,

“So the Jews grumbled about him …” (verse 41)

and Jesus says,

“Do not grumble among yourselves. No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him (or her) up on the last day” (verse 44).

Sadly,

“after this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him” (verse 66).

Let us think – what kind of person does the Father, the great and utterly wonderful Creator of all things “draw (to) him” through the work of his Son? What do we read in the last chapter in Isaiah?

“… this is the one to whom I will look: he who is humble and contrite in spirit and trembles at my word” (verse 2).

With what attitude of mind do we read the word of God?

Yes, it is a rock opera and herein lies the beauty and the traps of the stage. Director Sylvia Viles bravely takes a modern-day approach to tell the story and heavily relies on motion and pageantry. The trap is that lyrics do not exactly quote the Gospel, therefore, if the sound and diction are not close to perfection, the audience gets lost.
