Prayer

Communication and manifestation

John Calvin (Jehan Cauvin / Jean Calvin ) the influential French theologian and pastor during the Protestant Reformation summarized prayer as when “we call upon Him to manifest Himself to us in all His perfections.”

We may find different aspects of prayer.

  1. Prayer is mentioning the calling upon someone. It is the coming in contact with someone. In this case it should be the Most High God, Jehovah the Elohim. As such we can be the creatures communicating with our Creator. As we call upon him it might be for our benefit.
  2. Prayer is to help us through.
  3. Prayer is the way to express our fears, our hopes, and our desires, but also giving voice to our dreams, our grief, and our confessions.
  4. It is an expression of our willingness to move toward where we want to go.
  5. Prayer is an expression of our desire before God.
  6. It is a petition and a plea for God to reveal Himself to us.
  7. Prayer is our way to describe the God to whom we pray.  Describing God in terms of His virtues, His attributes, and His actions.
  8. Prayer is the giving notice of willingness to render the Most High God acceptable service.
  9. It is offering yourself willingly unto Jehovah.
  10. The prayer is a thanksgiving for the assurance we have received that the accomplishment of the great purpose of our life is virtually secured.
  11. Prayer recognizes God’s perfections.
  12. It is an honouring of Jehovah and sanctifying of His Name.
  13. Prayer is also the expression of trust in God that He will provide.
  14. It is a means to an end but not the end itself.

Because God has already everything and everything belongs to Him there is nothing we can give to God what does not already belongs to God. Therefore our praying can never be in the benefit of God.

Calling upon our Creator, we can enter into intimate communion with Him, recognizing our utter dependence upon His provision. When we communicate to and listen to our heavenly Father, we grow in his grace and in his knowledge, becoming more sensitive to and more aware of his constant presence and protection in our lives.

Prayer should be the means by which we call upon our Creator to rule over our lives. We should put ourselves at the side and bring God in pool position. In our prayers we should show understanding that everything comes from God and belongs to God. We, by praying to God, recognize that we do need Him and that we realize that He is powerful and able to change things. But by opening our thoughts onto Him we allow Him to enter into our circumstances, and by His sovereign power to work all things together for our good, as we love Him and as we trust Him.

When we pray we are acknowledging God’s rule over our lives, His ability to work in our lives, and His goodness in the midst of any circumstances He allows to enter into our lives. Prayer is then a demonstration of absolute trust and dependence on our Father’s perfect provision.

The Holy Scriptures records that many people had their prayers answered. We can see that biblical events where God intervened sometimes came to existence because people dared to ask God for a favour or for help. The people who got their prayers answered where those who prayed with a desire. Without a desire, there is also no need for prayer. If what we pray for truly comes from the bottom of our heart, surely the answers to our prayers will not stay out. But those biblical figures knew that they could not do without God and where fully aware of the need of prayers.

Praying together before Jehovah God

Writer Phillips Brooks penned these words:

“If man is man and God is God, to live without prayer is not merely an awful thing; it is an infinitely foolish thing.”

John Wesley was convinced that the prayers of God’s people rather than his preaching accounted for the thousands who came to Christ through his ministry.

It is the Wonder of God, the Almighty Being, which creates and destroys. Without the Almighty Power of the Eternal Spirit things would stay chaotic and humans would mix everything, making it impossible to work out for everyone. But by the Hand of God there shall come a time when everything shall work for the good and the whole world shall be restored.
In the meantime we do have to live in this ‘worldly life’ and count on the powerful God.

  • If God were not good, working all things together for the good of his people, why should we pray?
  • If God were not everywhere present, able to attend to the needs of all of his children all at once, then why should we pray?
  • If man can bring for everything a good solution, then why can we trust not men?

Our prayers acknowledge our finite helplessness, and God’s infinite wisdom and provision.

The Ear of God hears, and with Him ear and heart go together, and the hand does not long linger.

(31) “For יהוה {Jehovah} your Elohim is a compassionate Ěl, He does not forsake you, nor destroy you, nor forget the covenant of your fathers which He swore to them. (32) “For ask now of the days that are past, which were before you, since the day that Elohim created man on the earth, and ask from one end of the heavens to the other end of the heavens, whether there has been a Word as great as this, or has been heard like it.” (Deuteronomy 4:29-32 The Scriptures 1998+)

“(9) “And I say to you: ask and it shall be given to you, seek and you shall find, knock and it shall be opened to you. (10) “For everyone asking receives, and he who is seeking finds, and to him who is knocking it shall be opened. (11) “And what father among you whose son asks for bread shall give him a stone, or if he asks for a fish shall give him a snake instead of a fish, (12) or if he asks for an egg shall give him a scorpion? when Jehovah God starts something, when he begins something, he brings it to a successful conclusion. Nothing can stop him from doing that. He inspires prophecies like this, and he makes them happen.

We know that grief can numb us…it can be hard to feel anything including your presence, but that doesn’t mean that you aren’t there. Help us to know in times of grief, pain and heartache, that faith is more than a feeling…feelings come and go, but you don’t. Your presence…your Holy Spirit, is with us whether we can feel it or not. You promise to never leave our side and you are working for our good, in the depths of sorrow and the deepest valleys of adversity.
  • John Calvin (1509-1564) on patience and perseverance in prayer (deovivendiperchristum.wordpress.com)
He alone will suffice for all, since in himself he comprehends all good, and will at last reveal it to us on the day of judgment, when his kingdom shall be plainly manifested. We may add, that although God complies with our request, he does not always give an answer in the very terms of our prayers but while apparently holding us in suspense, yet in an unknown way, shows that our prayers have not been in vain.
  • I Cannot Hold You (Part 3) (cofchristdailybread.wordpress.com)
In many languages, God’s name contains the sound “Ahhh,” a sound we make when we are breathing out or sighing. Our prayer will use the Ahh names for God. Breathe out each name for God. You may either speak the name of God or find a single musical note to hold or chant as you sing God’s name. Pray or sing each name several times as you call on the God of many names: Yaweh, Adonai, Jehovah, Yeshua, Sophia, Allah, Alpha, Omega. Say or sing “amen” to close.

Scripture makes it abundantly clear that God is totally sovereign over the events and actions in history.  Nothing happens outside of His divine decree.
    +
This raises the question of prayer.  What happens when we pray?  Why does God command us to pray?  Why did Jesus pray? Does prayer truly change the mind of God, or alter His eternal decree?  If God is totally sovereign, then why do we need prayer?
  • This Then Is How You Should Pray (rootstothestream.net)

The believers hearts were for God as well. They begin the prayer by claiming the awesome power of God. This statement lets us know the believers felt that it was certainly God’s power at work and nothing of themselves. A unique aspect to their prayer is the use of scripture. But here not only do they pray Psalms 146:6 (who made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them) but they then again make reference to Jesus as the Messiah with portions of Psalm 2

When studying about prayer it is interesting to stumble upon thousands of reasons why people pray. Some pray expecting God to answer their questions, for anointing, deliverance, some pray to get close to God and some are just trying to see if prayer works. And it might shock you to know that some are praying for other people to die. Regardless of the reasons, there is a greater purpose why God would encourage us through the Scriptures to spend time praying (1Thess 5:17).

Prayer should break your selfish desires, ambitions and help you to reach and practice the perfect will of God.
  • The Power of Prayer (saltlightandwitnesses.com)
The thing about prayer is that this weapon is often seen as small and ineffective. Most people do not choose to pull it out until they are in a jam, but usually it is too late then. Prayer is our weapon that we should use several times a day. Prayer is our communication with God. If we do not pray, we cut off the source to our power.  Prayer is something that can be done out loud or silently. Prayer can be done while in conversation with others. There is power in prayer. Prayer not only changes things, but it changes people and situations as well.
  • Prayer Devotional August 15 (pastorbenk.com)
A sacrifice that is gone through thoughtlessly and without any moral or spiritual involvement was a sacrifice that was an abomination to God. It was worse than a sacrifice that was neglected. Sacrifice was to be a physical symbol of the sacrifice’s true attitude of repentance and commitment to God. A sacrifice in itself was ineffective. The striking truth is our regular behavior matters to God. Sacrifice must be backed by an upright life. I Samuel 15:22 says, “Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the voice of the Lord? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams.”

  2. Alan Hermann wrote: “The Pharisees made the mistake of believing that the most important thing about faith was what you know. The disciples and all Christians since have understood the error in this understanding. What we know is not to be disdained but far more important is Who we know and how we love Him. At its core Christianity must be far more than a belief. It is a relationship of deep, life changing love with our Saviour and Lord Jesus Christ. To know a lot about God and His Son is useful but not saving. To love Him as our dearest friend and to allow that love to change every aspect of our being makes us Christian and guarantees us an eternal love saturated relationship with Him. As with all truly love based relationships we will long to know Him better. We will search the Scriptures with all our heart, not to learn facts as such, but to know Him better who has stolen our mind and heart. The Bible is not a book of history and doctrine. It is a love letter from our eternal glorious Lover and as such we treasure it and read it over and over. He loves you. Have you opened His love letter today to see how much?”

We do have the love-letter of the One Who Loves Most and is the Most Trustworthy. His Words we can carry close to our heart and we can use them also to talk to Him who is always prepared to listen. But we also can reach Him with our humble words. Not the amount of words count but the intensity and where they come from, straight of the heart.

We should take much more time to communicate with the One who wants to be close to us.
