Jesus begotten Son of God #3 Messiah or Anointed one

The Anointed begotten Son of God

9. Messiah or Anointed one

As Christians we do speak about Jesus Christ the Messiah. The term Messiah is derived from the Hebrew root word mashiach. The verb is used when an object, an altar for example, was consecrated for a sacred purpose. The noun mashiach is used to describe a person consecrated for service to God. The Hebrews believed that when God anointed a person, that person received a measure of the Holy Spirit. He became a vehicle of the activity of God in a special way. Prophets, priests and kings were anointed for the sacred offices they held. Thus the OT Scriptures speak of many “christs” or “anointed ones.”[1]+[2]

The term is used to identify a specially commissioned servant of God. There is no hint that “messiahs” were to be Deity! They were agents of the One God.

There was one Messiah who was promised long beforehand.

English: child Jesus with the virgin Mary, wit...

“Those who oppose יהוה are shattered, from the heavens He thunders against them. יהוה judges the ends of the earth, and gives strength to His sovereign, and exalts the horn of His anointed.” (1 Samuel 2:10 The Scriptures 1998+)

‘And I shall raise up for Myself a trustworthy priest who does according to what is in My heart and in My being. And I shall build him a steadfast house, and he shall walk before My anointed forever. (1 Samuel 2:35 The Scriptures 1998+)

The sovereigns of the earth take their stand, And the rulers take counsel together, Against יהוה and against His Messiah, and say, (Psalms 2:2 The Scriptures 1998+)

יהוה, remember the reproach of Your servants, That I have borne in my bosom – Of all the many peoples, With which Your enemies have reproached, O יהוה, With which they have reproached the footsteps of Your anointed. (Psalms 89:50-51 The Scriptures 1998+)

“For the sake of Your servant Dawiḏ, Do not turn away the face of Your Anointed One.” (Psalms 132:10 The Scriptures 1998+)

“And I put deliverance on her priests, And her kind ones sing for joy. “There I make the horn of Dawiḏ grow; I shall set up a lamp for My Anointed One. “I put shame on his enemies, While on Him His diadem shall shine.” (Psalms 132:16-18 The Scriptures 1998+)

“At the beginning of your supplications a word went out, and I have come to make it known, for you are greatly appreciated. So consider the word and understand the vision: “Seventy weeks are decreed for your people and for your set-apart city, to put an end to the transgression, and to seal up sins, and to cover crookedness, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up vision and prophet, and to anoint the Most Set-apart. “Know, then, and understand: from the going forth of the command to restore and build Yerushalayim until Messiah the Prince is seven weeks and sixty-two weeks. It shall be built again, with streets and a trench, but in times of affliction. “And after the sixty-two weeks Messiah shall be cut off and have naught. And the people of a coming prince shall destroy the city and the set-apart place. And the end of it is with a flood. And wastes are decreed, and fighting until the end. “And he shall confirm a covenant with many for one week. And in the middle of the week he shall put an end to slaughtering and meal offering. And on the wing of abominations he shall lay waste, even until the complete end and that which is decreed is poured out on the one who lays waste.” (Daniel 9:23-27 The Scriptures 1998+)

“So when you see the ‘abomination that lays waste,’ spoken of by Dani’ĕl the prophet, set up in the set-apart place” – he who reads, let him understand – (Matthew 24:15 The Scriptures 1998+)

“You shall go forth to save Your people, To save Your Anointed. You shall smite the Head from the house of the wrong, By laying bare from foundation to neck. Selah.” (Habakkuk 3:13 The Scriptures 1998+)

  1. Dear Christadelphian Ecclesia:Thank you for this message.I understand when God anoints someone, that person receives a measure of the Holy Spirit. I understand 1 Samuel 2:10. Those who opposed are shattered from the Heavens, and gives strength to His sovereign, and exalts the horn of His anointed. I understand 1 Samuel 2:35. And I shall raise for Myself a trustworthy priest, and shall build him a steadfast house, and he shall walk before my anointed forever . I understand the seventy weeks to put an end to transgression, and to seal up sins. Is there anything I missed in this message? May God continue to bless you with peace, love, harmony, and grace. May God of hope fill you with joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. (Rom.15:13) Ricklee

    1. In 1 Samuel 2:10 we find the first time in scripture that the word “anointed”(Messiah) appears in the sense of pointing out to a future king. As there was no king in Israel at the time, it appears to be pointing forward to Christ. There is a remarkable resemblance between the song of Hannah and that of Mary (Luke 1:46)
Hannah, blessed with the Holy Spirit had Samuel as a special gift from God, being both a foreshadow of Mary and Jesus: (1Samuel 1:20) as Mary had Jesus through the intervention of the Holy Spirit (Luke 1:35) – Samuel was wholly dedicated to Jehovah from birth to death (1Samuel 1:22) – Jesus was wholly dedicated to His Father’s will from birth to death (Matthew 26:42) Samuel and Jesus received knowledge and favour from the Holy Spirit. (1Samuel 2:26; Luke 2:52)

Hannah was barren and God had opened her womb.
From the first verses of 1 Samuel we got to know that there is only one god like Jehovah and that nobody can be as holy like Him. (Isaiah 45:5,6). The perfect, glorious, and incomparable holiness of God is a great and powerful and inspiring thought and that Holiness is the highest ambition toward which any mortal can aspire, for it brings him closest to God. Cp (Luke 1:49,69).
Like Hannah we can rejoice in the have rejoiced in the salvation by Him, which came to an ultimate climax in the provision of the son of God.
Hannah’s thought are taken up and amplified by later prophets (Isaiah 2:4; Micah 4:3; Joel 3:10). The barren Sarah becomes the “mother” of a multitude who, through faith in Christ, partake of the promises held dear by her and her husband.

(1Samuel 2:8-10): Hannah’s song is related not only to Samuel, but also to David, the great king Jehovah would anoint. And even beyond this, she must have caught a glimpse also of David’s greater son, Jesus (Luke 1:46-55, 69). Her son Samuel would set in motion a marvellous chain of events that will not climax till David’s “Lord” Jesus Christ will ascend his ancestor’s throne of glory. God would lift up the poor ‘carpenters’ son as Jehovah Lifts the needy from the ash heap (Cp Luke 1:52): “lifted up the humble”.
“He will keep the feet of his saints, and the wicked shall be silent in darkness; for by strength shall no man prevail. The adversaries of Yahweh shall be broken to pieces; out of heaven shall he thunder upon them: Yahweh shall judge the ends of the earth; and he shall give strength to his king, and exalt the horn of his anointed.” (1 Samuel 2:9-10 KJBPNV)
This anointed one referring to the Messiah, Jesus Christ who is going to break every enemy of God like a potter’s vessel which will get broken. As David and Jesus could get the Spirit in them, Jesus taught his disciples to pray that the Spirit also may come over them. When David got the Spirit over him, he did not become God, nor shall we become God when the Holy Spirit shall come over us.
But those who receive the Spirit can become ‘saints’ whose feet shall held together by Jesus and his Father, not to be silent in the darkness, but letting the world know the Works of the Father and of His son, the anointed whose “horn” will be exalted and be allowed to be king. (1Samuel 2:9-10; Numeri 14:21)

Being fulfilled with the Holy Spirit all the earth will be full of the glory of the Lord and there will be no cause of pain or destruction for the earth will be full of the knowledge of Jehovah as the sea is covered by the waters. Jesus will hand over the Kingdom, which he shall be allowed to reign until eternity, to his Father and than shall God be the Upper-king. The Son, who received the Holy Spirit will also himself be subject unto him that put all things under him, so that God may be all in all. And the Lord will be King over all the earth: in that day there will be one Jehovah and his name one.(Isaiah 11:9; Zechariah 14:9; Revelation 11:15; 1 Corinthians 15:28)
“And when all things have been subjected unto him, then shall the Son also himself be subjected to him that did subject all things unto him, that God may be all in all.” (1 Corinthians 15:28 ASV)
Also Eli and Samuel got the Spirit of God over them, but they never became God, Also Samuel got the blessing to receive the Holy Spirit and his soul was nourished with visions of the eternal purpose, but he did not as a man of God become an eternal God (1Samuel 2:26-27).

In the promissed Anointed Jesus Christ the <messiah we do find the Most and Faithful High Priest. the world did need a man like all other human beings to proof to the Creator that a human could keep faithful and be a merciful High Priest in his service to God, so that the people’s sins would be forgiven.
“Therefore in all things it behooved him to be made like unto \@his\@ brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things \@pertaining\@ to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people.” (Hebrews 2:17 KJBPNV)
Though begotten by the Power of God (the Holy spirit) Jesus was a partaker of flesh and blood.
“Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;” (Hebrews 2:14 KJBPNV)
“For we have not a high priest that cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but one that hath been in all points tempted like as [we are, yet] without sin.” (Hebrews 4:15 ASV)

When we look at Jesus we should see the likeness to us.As Christian friends, companions in following Jesus his call to the heights, we can find in him the priest of the ecclesia (so we do not need another one) and the centrepiece of everything we believe. It is by having Jesus as our great High Priest with ready access to God that we can go up straight ahead to his Father.
Christ did never presume to set himself up as high priest, but was set apart by the One who said to him, "You’re my Son; today I celebrate you!" He humbly took that role and by doing that he became the source of eternal salvation to all who believingly obey him.

It is for that reason, to obey Christ, that we do have to be fully aware of his words about himself and about his Father whom had sent him. It is by recognising the position of his sonship and his agreement to offer himself for all of us that we can find Jesus, running on ahead of us, because he has taken up his permanent post as high priest for us, in the order of Melchizedek. So now we have a high priest who perfectly fits our needs: completely holy, uncompromised by sin, with authority extending as high as God’s presence in heaven itself.

The law appoints as high priests men who are never able to get the job done right. In the Old Testament we have got many examples where it did go wrong with them or their children. With Jesus, Old and New Testament are bounded together and received the perfect match to take up the position as mediator or priest for us to God.

For the eyes of his nephew and later also for others God showed human beings His favourite son who by the intervening command of God,came appointed the Son, who staid absolutely, eternally perfect and authoritative right alongside God.

As we know the assigned task of a high priest is to offer both gifts and sacrifices, and it’s no different with the priesthood of Jesus. But when the Messiah arrived, high priest of the superior things of this new covenant, he bypassed the old tent and its trappings in this created world and went straight into heaven’s "tent"—the true Holy Place—once and for all.

“For every high priest, being taken from among men, is appointed for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins:” (Hebrews 5:1 ASV)

As you rightly point out, with this Messiah Jesus, the Christos, we got the final Christ.

Though people could understand that Daniel 9:24-27 became completely fulfilled at the destruction of Herod’s Temple at AD 67-73.

Daniel knew by reading the prophecies of Jeremiah that the time of the Jerusalem captivity was about up. Daniel understood from Jeremiah 25:12 that the Jews were to be in captivity for seventy years. Some Jews had returned and commenced work on the temple. However the work had been frustrated (Ezra 4:5) In fact Daniel had this vision in the year preceding the re commencement of the work (Ezra 4:24) So Daniel had been pondering the prophecy of Jeremiah because the work had started and had ceased for about 16 years.
As a result of his knowledge Daniel began a very fervent and heartfelt prayer asking for the forgiveness and restoration of his people. In time Daniel's prayer was answered and many Jews returned with Zerubbabel and Ezra to rebuild the temple and the city of Jerusalem during the reign of Cyrus.

Artaxerxes Longimanus gave Ezra permission to go to Jerusalem in 457 BC. Seven weeks equates to 49 years (on the day-for-a-year principle). And so, the restoration of Jerusalem by Ezra and Nehemiah would take 49 years, which it did.

That would bring the date to 408 BCE. Sixty-two weeks (ESV) equates to 434 years. 434 years from 408 BCE would be 74 CE. Let’s take into account that most scholars fix the date of Jesus’ birth at 4 BCE. And so, the date would be 70 CE. This would be the time that the prince (Titus) who is to come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary (ESV).

Those Jews who accepted Jesus’ warning and His reference to Daniel’s prophecy would have been prepared for the disaster (Matthew 24:15-21).

When Jerusalem became surrounded by armies at AD 67-73, and those who were in Judea had to run away to the hills it was speaking of that time. But it could also be that there could come an other war were Jerusalem shall be encircled by enemies, so we do have to be careful when we know also about still to come ’Days of Punishment’, to make all that the Scriptures say come true.

Apart from announcing pertinent time information about Christ's crucifixion, the seventy weeks' prophecy was meant to warn those living in Jerusalem in the time of Christ concerning the destruction of the city.

Jesus reminds His listeners to take cognisance of Daniel's prophecy and prepare themselves (Mark 13:14). Those who did escaped the horrors of the fall of Jerusalem. Likewise, we should heed the words of prophecy concerning the coming destruction on earth and prepare ourselves. We do that by reading the Word of God, praying without ceasing, and living our lives according to the commands of Christ whatever the conditions are which surround us (Romans 12:12).

The "Death and destruction" shall only come to its end when Jesus returns. Jesus has taken up his position as high priest already, but that does not make it that we are not going to suffer any more or shall not die. By dying on the stake Jesus also took away the penalty of the sin, but until the last judgement we shall have to die because of our inequities. The penalty for our sins shall be seen by this world. We cannot escape the confrontation with death.

We consider that "anointing of the most holy place (i.e. Temple)" was fulfilled when the "New Jerusalem" (which is the "ecclesia," the bride of Christ, according to the angel in (Revelation 21:2) replaced the "earthly" Jerusalem that was filled with "harlotry" (Revelation 17-18) and destroyed by God (through the Roman armies).
Daniel 9:26 was fulfilled when Jesus was "cut off" (crucified) after he declared that he would having nothing more to do with Herod’s Temple (Matthew 23:33-36) because it was to be completely "desolated" by the Roman siege of Jerusalem in his own "generation" (Matthew 24:34). We do believe that Luke confirmed that the Roman "armies surrounding Jerusalem" (AD 70) was the meaning of this "desolation" (Luke 21:20-23).

About that destroyment Jesus also alluded to this when he compared his own "wicked generation" with "the days of Noah" (Matthew 24-25). As such you could say that Daniel 9:27 was fulfilled when the Mosaic "covenant" was confirmed (i.e. fulfilled) when Jesus came (parousia) in AD 70 to judge Israel by means of the Roman siege. The "wing" is a reference to the Temple, which was completely "abominated and desolated" when the Roman armies burned it and knocked it down (Matthew 24:1-3; Luke 21:20-23).
